I have made a few sets of grips, but have asked someone for a piece of wood out of a block and need to know exact dimensions... what do they need to be for a set of grips for a Ruger or SAA? I believe his is 2.5" thick... I can cut that in half & that should be plenty for thickness, right?

Something 2.5" thick would easily make two sets of grips. Assuming that the edges are clean and nothing needs to be taken off the wood, a minimum of 2 1/8" is what I use and 4.5" in length will make any of the Ruger single action grips.
