I recently acquired another Intercontinental Arms Super Dakota in 41 Magnum. These are pretty rare guns, especially in 5.5”. Unfortunately this one has seen better days so I thought I’d restore it.
The problems include a missing rear sight blade, a missing front sight blade, rough stocks, horrible endshake, and a worn bolt.
The grips aren’t bad but have dings and scratches. Enough that I decided to refinish them:
Endshake measured 0.020”:
The cylinder bushing wasn’t very hard to peened over the years causing the slop:
We decided to make a new one out of tool steel:
Honing and hardening the new bushing:
Fit to the cylinder:
Surface grinding the boss to final spec. There’s no discernable endshake now:
I also started to sand the grips and they smoothed up nicely. This is how they look prior to the Tru Oil finish.
The rear sight set screws were missing and the threads were metric. We retapped them to 8 x 32:
We then installed an OM Blackhawk rear blade which was a tad thick. 0.001” off the front in a surface grinder made it fit.
Another mechanical glitch was found upon half-cock. Namely, the bolt doesn’t drop enough to clear the notch. We tore the gun down and found that someone ground on the bolt’s rear cams. I ordered another bolt from Numrich Arms for an Armi San Marco Regulator. My Super Dakota was Armi Jager built so I’m hoping it’ll work. We’ll see.
Up next is fabricating the front sight blade and installing the new bolt. Other updates will include the finished grips, brass re-polishing, and rebluing.
