It was around noon time when I made the decision to set up a new treestand in an older spot I have hunted in the past. I know it is good late in the year when muzzleloader in Massachusetts opens up.
While driving down the dirt road I noticed there was something in the road. It was a bird but I wasn't sure what kind. I checked one stand and it was AOK so I got back in and drove down to the area I wanted to set up the stand. As I got out of my truck I heard a rustling in the leaves above me on the high banking. I knew it was that bird as it was too loud to be anything else.
As usual, I carry my Ruger Single Six in a Simply Ruggen pancake when out and about. I had it loaded with Hornady's Critical Defense 45 grain FTX bullets in 22 WRM. I walked towards the banking slowly and spotted my quarry.
It was a Hungarian partridge. Obviously it isn't native to Massachusetts but it is bird season and fair game. It then darted back over the banking. I slowly walked up and heard a movement. The bird was frozen against the ground about fifteen feet in front of me. I slowly lined up the Firesights on it's neck and squeezed the trigger. The shot severed the bird's neck and it flopped about a bit.
I know some don't think much of this but it was a big thrill that made my day. After getting the bird I put it in the bed of my truck and then cut a path for my new stand. The past storms of the fall have dropped a lot of trees and the folding saw got a bit of a workout. I set up my stick ladder in a great spot and the vacated.
At home the bird was dressed out and is now marinading in the fridge. I wished there was three more but it will do for now.
