I Read John linebaugh's artice year or two ago about how the perfect 45 starts as a 44mag. and then bored up the 45 colt demensions. Do Gun smiths use the factory 44 mag barrel and open it up or does it still require a new barrel. Same question with Mr. Bowens Super Redhawk 44mag to 475L conversion.
Thanks Rabbit

From what I hear the rebore can easily overcome the expense of a new barrel. Not even taking into consideration the time factor... When we were writing about sending a 357 barrel off to be bored to 41 there were a lot a gloom and doom words about time..

Often they use a take-off .45 barrel from a 5 shot conversion.
When Bowen does a .475 Redhawk he typically uses a custom 5 shot cylinder as well as a re-bore. He has 2 Redhawk barrels of mine being re-bored. Said good luck in getting them within a year.
Only time any of my customs barrels have been re-bores is when they have been S&W or Colt Python barrels.

When I did my first one on a 3-screw SBH, some 20+ years ago, i fitted a take-off .45 barrel, and had John L. Rechamber the original cylinder for .45 Colt.. Worked like a charm..!

To answer your question Rabbit, you need a different barrel. A 44 cant be rebored to 45 Colt.

To answer your question Rabbit, you need a different barrel. A 44 cant be rebored to 45 Colt. I have a Blued Bowen 1917 Redhawk in 45 colt that I'm pretty sure started as a 44 magnum with a cylinder rechamber and barrel rebore. Why are you thinking it can't be done?

Easiest way to make a tight 45 is to start with a 45 that has a .452 groove. A 44 mag cylinder is then bored to tight 45 spec's and timed for the revolver. I have one done by Forkin and Stroh and it is something. If you miss its your fault. Mine is a Bisley Ruger.

I think what the problem is that the lands and groves dont always line up and there might not be enough meat in the groves to make the lands for the 45.

Malibuwagon is right. Better to rebore a 41 barrel to 45. Unless it lines up nicely a 44 magnum cylinder won't always clean up when chambered to 45 either. What's the point of spending all the money it takes to do the work without good alignment ??

Stroh did my M29 to 45 Colt conversion (with a 45 Colt barrel) with no problem as far as tight cylinder rechambering. Assume a Ruger would be the same.

I only mention it because I sent Clements a 44 SBH cylinder to linebore to 45 colt and it wouldnt quite clean up. It was serviceable and it worked but is wasnt right. You guys are grown men and can do as you please, but I have long said "There aint no thing like a SURE thing"....

I understand the economics around setting the 44 barrel aside but for the cylinder not to clean up seems incredible. That kind of manufacturing variation from gun to gun would suggest every barrel/cylinder combo need to be a custom match. I'm would have thought Ruger held their spec better than that.
