This is just the tailend of an ongoing discussion on a local forum. All I had to do was mention firelapping and I was immediately beset upon and told how to lap a barrel the "correct way". Here's what our local well respected self proclaimed 'smith had to say about firelapping: "Just thought of this if your barrel has a crush in it ,a polishing stick( the 'ol split dick ), a roll sandpaper lap and a drill motor With the bore measured a few minutes of polishing the crush and it will be Removed. No mess , no shooting range and saved the expense of fire lapping kit. And quick Hold the stick so it is centered and no damage You say it will screw up the rifling ?? No it just remove metal from the lands not the grooves. " I don't know why I went to all that needless trouble....

It's all so simple. Why didn't we think of this?

Well, I couldn't go any further when I got a mental picture of a "split ....". Think I'll stick with the ol' messy way.

If you wouldnt mind to post his name so I will be sure to never buy a used gun from this clown. he's in Louisville, Ky. I doubt you'll run across him, don't think he ships anything. I'm not sure what his real name is he just goes by "guncrank". He is definitely cranky, I'll give him that. Took days to get him to admit there was a difference between a "New Vaquero" and the original Vaquero. Now he follows me around and craps on every comment I make.

I hate that, bagdadjoe. There's a guy on another forum that posts on every single thread, and it's clear he knows very little on the subjects. One evening after dinner I went there to look around and - I kid you not - every single thread on the first page had him listed as the most recent poster... makes me stay away because I'm afraid I'll get too annoyed and then post something mean that I'll regret later... lol. I will make sure to give this gunsmith trick the attention it deserves.

I've just given it a rest. Some of the other people on there are asking him questions on his version that so far he seems unable to answer. I don't know whether it's funny or pitiful.

I don't know whether it's funny or pitiful. The latter, for sure.

What site was this on if I may ask? I'd love to know that too as I'd have no problem saying things I'd never regret.

I was asked to leave a site when I pointed out what the resident guru was promoting was dangerous.

I don't know who guncrank is or what forum he's on but I sure hope we don't cross paths. A guy in Radcliff was recomended to measure the bores of my Bisley cylinder, I hope it's not him!! Rich in Hart Co. Ky

I can't wait to see what 2 dogs has to say about this guy,, guncrank!
I'll be the first one to say I don't know squat compared to many of the fine folks around here,,, but I'm no total dummy either. Even if I had very limited knowledge of firelapping or the crush fitting,, I'd know enough to know that process would be totally wrong. When I read this, I was reminded of the gun guy I knew who would reload split pistol cases,,, after he'd applied fingernail polish to the cracks. Some folks should not tinker with mechanical objects,,, period.
I'm curious about what forum it was too!

I'm still trying to work the kinks out of my Bisley Blackhawk .45. Ruger replaced the barrel when I sent it back because of accuracy issues. (Site cranked all the was to the rt.and still shooting to the left). Ask if they would measure the cylinder diameters, they never mentioned if they did or didn't.Last I shot was couple weeks ago, same issue, and leaded up like the devil. Going to run it again later today after atacking the grass!
