I vaguely remember a thread on minimum barrel length and caliber for handgun hunting in various States. It was quite a while back and I'm not having any luck with the SEARCH function.
Does anyone know the particulars for New Mexico offhand?
Thanks,

I tried the NM Fish and Game web site before I asked here, no joy. I saw definitions for Ammo but nothing that mentions handguns.

Here you go: www.wildlife.state.nm.us/publications/documents/rib/2011/2011-2012_Big_Game_RIB_Optimized2.pdfThey really don't mention anything about handgun barrel length or energy - each species has their own firearm section and they just mention this in the deer section as an example: "Legal Sporting Arm Types Any Legal Sporting Arm Centerfire rifle or handgun; shotgun no smaller than 28 gauge, firing a single slug; any bow and arrows; crossbows and bolts; and any muzzleloading rifle" Calling the State D&R might be in order for peace of mind.

joej, thanks for the link. I was concentrating on the "Definitions" section of the web site.

I finally got my answer, after several trips through automated phone systems and a long time on hold with 888-248-6866 Customer Assistance. Anywho, after this goat rope, the info I was given is, the caliber must be .24 or greater and there is no barrel length requirement. That is verbal only from Customer Assistance regarding hunting Elk with handgun!
