Are cylinder rings avoidable with all revolvers?
If so, what's the secret to avoiding them with both single and double action revolvers?
Or, are they "normal" with certain revolvers, S&W's for example?

I would think that the ring is directly related to the timing of the bolt. Watch the bolt as you cock the gun, if the bolt comes up early you will end up with a ring from normal use. I have also seen many people handle revolvers in such a manner that caused these lines on guns without need.

I can not speak about double actions but on three screw Rugers, Colt single actions and TLA single actions if you always remember to bring the hammer back to full cock before lowering, cylinder rings are not an issue. On the new model Rugers it is a standard result of their internal parts and geometry. It CAN be eliminated but it takes modifying the bolt plunger or the bolt itself to change timing issues. It is not something that I can pull off but Carl, the owner of the Ruger forum does it all the time and he has shown pictures of where you have to add on to the bolt to make it work like this.
