Sorry I haven't responded sooner, I've been out of commision for a couple of days. Glenn thats a very nice write up & I'm glad you finally got it done, I know you've wanted a bison for quite a while, great job. When I first heard that your loads were clocking 1167 fps I was a little concerned because those 70/30 slugs are normally for 1000-1100 fps, if I had known earlier I would have made yours 80/20 WW & lead. Anyway, when you make a one shot kill on a mature bull bison with a revolver that pretty much seals the deal on whether it works or not. With hollowpoint bullets there are 3 things that you can change, first is bullet alloy depending on velocity, second is velocity itself, & third is, all HP's aren't created equal, you can use the smaller pins to delay expansion a bit, or use the same alloy & go with a solid, thats the beauty of cast slugs, you can take them anywhere you want & they will work, you just have to experiment. High velocity isn't needed with big bullets. With that big nose cavity they are actually working much like the softnose slugs that I like so well, you get initial expansion & then great penetration. That was some great shooting with outstanding results, one shot kills are bison are rare with gun.

I was thinking the same thing Dick. Use the same alloy and the smaller HP pin and you would delay the opening but in the end, we did get an exit and lots of internal damage so I don't know that it really matters to be honest. I will be shooting a deer with this load before too long and I bet it is VERY effective. I'll be willing to wager that if it does run after the shot, the blood trail will not be hard to follow. Thanks again for the bullet Dick! We've discussed the particular slug for almost 3 years and finally have had the chance to use one. I figure that the big guy went down so fast because you must have rubbed the bullets on the crocs before mailing them here

A great story just told. I almost did the same when I was living in Alberta. With no handguns allowed the plan went into the bucket....

To say nice guns is simply stating the obvious. But excellent decision making on the bullet, which seems to have done extraordinarily well and thank you for a most superb write up. You have done some to keep that ember in me to make a Bison hunt one day too!
All the best Mark
