My wife and I traveled to Wyoming to hunt antelope with handguns this October. This was my second antelope hunt and her first. The trip was planned and prepared for since February with lots of shooting practice. We customized a Thompson Center Contender for her to use.
This is a 30-30 I used on a antelope buck in 2010. I intended to use my SuperBlackhawk with iron sights. I believe an antelope with a sixgun is the ultimate challenge. You would have to be a heck of a hunter, heck of a shot or likely both. I bought a Single Six, changed the front sight to match my 44 and shot hundreds of rounds through both sixguns out to 100 yards. I finally felt comfortable out to 100 yards but every step closer would help. My wife however had it figured out and could shoot out to 200 with her Contender.
Heather held a buck tag and would be hunting on the Durham buffalo ranch. I had a doe tag and was hoping to find a landowner that would let me hunt. Filling her buck tag was the first priority. It did'nt take long. On the first afternoon following a short stalk, she connected on this excellent buck at 203 yards.
I had several days to hunt, but my landowner leads fell through and looked like my hunt was not going to happen. A last minute oppurtunity came together, but due to time constraints I had to get it done in one morning. The landowner asked me to only shoot a mature doe. So I had only one morning to hunt, was looking for a particular animal, and the antelope were spooky. I made the decision to use the Contender. After a 5-600 yard stalk that included walking, running, low walking and finished with a belly crawl I was in position to pick out the most mature doe out of a group of 15. I shot her at 233 yards with the 30-30.
This was a fantastic vacation and hunt. We brought our three year old son with us and took in so much scenery and animal encounters including prairie dogs , antelope, deer , sheep, and elk at Rocky Mtn National park.
