I'm now finalizing the details of my first custom build. For SA's, I own a couple of nice Rugers and a FA97 that I absolutely adore. This will be my first +44/45 Big Bore revolver and most likely my only custom. I've got the main things figured out, but don't leave out the little details that really set a custom apart. A thread like this might help us custom newbies.
Could you guys please help out by stating some of your favorite details on your customs? Details you either wish you had sprung for, or are glad you did? Pics might help this thread along.
Here's what I have now. JH doing the build. Some of this sublect to minor changes...
Medium Frame Bisley Flattop .480 Fluted Cylinder, BP Champher 5 inch barrel CCH Frame Bowen Target Rear, patridge front Freespin JH Reshape gripframe

IIRC, Bowen does not make his target rear for the flattops. You may be limited to the rough country. Personally, If I was going with a 5" barrel, I would get a longer ERH from a 10" super and shorten it to run all the way to the end of the barrel. Since JH is doing it, I'm assuiming you will end up with his FA-style front sight base. I highly recommend commercially available interchangeable front sight blades (which Jack's front sight base has). Having interchangeable front sights on my Clements pair is nice - having to have any custom blades made by Clements is not.

I don't know about that - having the blades made up individually as to exact height and slimming that blade down to 0.100" or 0.090" with a gold bar placed exactly where you want it - all for $60 isn't all that bad when compared to a night out with a high maintenance gal.

I had thought about going full length ejector rod, I found a pic last night of a 5 inch with that and it looks pretty sharp. I'm looking over pics of different muzzle crowns and stuff like that trying to fine tune what I want. The big things are easier to decide on because Im sure what I want. I get home next week and I plan on talking with Jack and getting his opinion on some of the smaller details, I'm just trying to have the options in my head so I know what he's talking about.

Are you talking about putting a 480 ruger (right?) in 357 flattop frame?
I know little to nothing about customs but I would say that my three biggest options are, Sights, Caliber, Barrel Length. The one that is a must is a nice trigger, without this all the other stuff seems wasted.

No customs here, but what always catches my eye, is a heavy barrel with a barrel band. Just looks like it means business I guess. stevemb

I started out wanting a 5 inch octagon, then to a straight bull barrel, some days back to octagon. My custom needs to keep a classic look to it. I like barrel bands too but like 'em more on stainless. Either way your right, they look like they mean business.

I have the plan to build a 500 lb with JH, Custom details are personal but I have certain details I am a big fan off, Barrel band is one, and grips to me are as essential to a good trigger pull, I learned this the hard way. I would not skimp on the grips choose the ones you want not need.
Different sight blades to fit your application?
Finish...pick the best for your application
I will ask the question, do you have any plan to put a red dot or reflex style sight on the revolver, If its an option that had validity it may be worth while to custom fit and finish a base for the sight, I may do this for a reflex sight, just a thought
I still don't have all the details I want in one revolver but thats why you can buy another one ;D

Mine are sketching up front sight base designs and hammer treatments and having them incorporated into the build. The other is proper clean remarking of caliber and the maker's name. There are only a couple that I like.

Boxhead, do you have any ideas on custom hammer treatments for Smith double action guns that are unique or classy? I am starting another model 58 project and I don't have a lot of DA tweaking experience. I do know the pictures of your S&W with the Ken Brown (I think that is the gentleman's name) grips makes me want to try him for the gripmaker on this one.

The only Smith I have heavily tweaked is that former M29 45 Colt Stroh piece you refer to. Here's a close up of the hammer. I had the thumb piece leaned down (though still wider than the hammer body) and rounded some with no other changes as the profile is as lean as it can be, just look "right" to me as they are. I had him thin the target trigger down to the width of the trigger guard as well. Then Turnbull CCH'd them. The grips are Keith Brown's. Mine are exhibition French walnut Ropers checkered 18 lpi with his exhibition finish. www.kbgrips.com/

Here's another revolver from Huntington with an octagon barrel in .500 JRH. It also has the modified grip frame. This one is owned by cottonstalk.

That one is the reason I'm spending all my money. I got to hold that revolver, and a few more, at his house while I was buying some lead from him. Super nice guy with some nice revolvers.
