So... I came across a Smith M29 barrel to have re-bored that the seller says came to him with a smooth bore. Says S&W didn't rifle it.
Question is...
Is it illegal to own a smooth bore pistol barrel if it's not on a gun?
Seller says a forum member (not here) told him it was a felony to own.
Guess I could ask Hamilton. He'd know for sure. Anybody else sure?

It's not a firearm without a receiver. It's just a piece of tubing.

It's not a firearm without a receiver. It's just a piece of tubing. Yep. Moot point until it's on a frame. I believe Hamilton Bowen made an SAA that was a Paradox, to imitate the smoothbore guns performers shot glass balls with in Wild West shows. I think the paradox rifling made everything OK with the ATF while still delivering decent shot patterns and putting a little spin on a slug. Just checked his book The Custom Revolver; page 188-189. It backs up my first paragraph.

It's not a firearm without a receiver. It's just a piece of tubing. Exactly. I saw an FA 454 that got out of the factory one time that had no rifling in it. Mistake happen, no one is perfect

Yep.. It's legal, so long as it is not attached to a receiver.. I have an 11" section of 12-gauge barrel, threaded and chambered, which as is, belongs in the same legal category as a pipe...

I'd beware of any NFA item. The BATFE has funny ideas about stuff. Still remember years ago you could buy MAC-10 receiver flats from an ad in Shotgun News. Old shooting buddy ordered a few. Just cut unbent flats. BATFE shows up at his door one day to collect them. I'd bet that if you had a shotgun with a 18 plus inch barrel in one hand and an 11 inch drop in barrel in the other you just might have passed the breaking point.

Respondents are correct. Curious, a FA escaping factory without rifling?
These things have happened. Look carefully at your unrifled M-29 barrel... if you see crosshatching, that is a bore that was micro-honed before going the broach rifling machine. It may be a collector piece.
Alternatively, it may be a prime candidate for rifling. I'm not up on new production S&W; the old school barrels rival the best quality anywhere, and exceed all the rest.
Perhaps the factory would trade you a brand new M-29 for it, rifling and all! David Bradshaw
