I have a colleague with a stainless steel Puma in .454 Casull that has never been shot. He offered it to me for $525.00. Does this seem like a good price? At first he wanted $800.00 for it but after giving him some grief about it, he dropped the price considerably. Thoughts?

Buy it! Maybe you can talk him down a little more. I think they're hard to find these days aren't they? I paid 625 for mine new. What length barrel? 16 or 20? Wood stock? There were a few synthetic ones.

snyd, it appears to have a 20-inch barrel and the stock is wood. It's new, really.

What year was the gun made? Does it have the Lawyer Safety Switch in the bolt? It's a firing pin block. The very early ones did not have the mag tube threaded into the receiver. The tube would move forward under recoil and shear the pin at the barrel band. They went to a threaded tube and for a while there was no lawyer switch. Then they went to the lawyer switch. Mine has both but I got rid of the switch and made a plug. Mine has Hi-Viz sights which were and additional cost. What does it have for sights? It looks like Rossi/Taurus is making them again. www.rossiusa.com/product-list.cfm?category=8Here's one on Guns America www.gunsamerica.com/901482044/Guns/Rifles/Rossi-Rifles/Cowboy/Rossi_Model_92_SS_454_Casull_Layawa.htm

Here's a so-so pic of the switch on the bolt. I removed it, cut the bottom off, ground off the top and put it back in. It's just a plug now.

I don't know, snyd. I will ask him to bring it in so that I can see it. The first thing I'd check is the mag tube. Take it apart and make sure it screws into the receiver. Who knows, you may get lucky and it might have the threaded mag tube and no lawyer switch! Also, 16 inchers are more scarce.

Steve Gunz makes a nice 'ghost ring' that replaces that #@$# firing pin block. Easy to install and works well. I've got the 20' Rossi 92 .45 Colt that rides under the seat of the pickup and I put one on it.

Mike McNett of Double Tap has/had a Puma 454. His was holding up well last I spoke to him, and you know[/b] he doesn't run much of anything except high end loads through his guns.
