That sure looks fun, thanks for sharing the pics. What are the target distances usually, in those matches?

I think they're set a tsomething like 7 yatds, and hey, do they shoot the wax bullets at that match or are they using guns that can still shoot lead? All my experience with any of the quickdraw stuff was with a borrowed modified blackhawk that could never be used for shooting "real " ammo again (due to the aluminum barrel and cylinder, and extensive internal modifications)

CFDA rules only allow stock 45 Colt single actions. The cases are stock 45 colt. The load is 4.2 grs of tripple 7 ffg. The primers are win LPM. The bullet is wax as is necessary for the saftey of the shooters and spectators. Velocity 650 FPS. Targets are 21 FT. the top times this weekend were in the low " 4 's " .435 of a sec. It takes 3/100's of a sec. for the wax to hit the timer so they are drawing and shooting in .432 of a second. If you blink you missed it! The oldest shooter in his 90's Some of the youngest

So not knowing anything about this.... starting position is hand on the gun and one hand only???
They can't use the off-hand to cock it on the way up? Is there a minimum barrel length requirement?

Looks like quickdraw out your wa yis a lot different than how they did it in OH, they used a 38 Special case modified to take a 209 shotgun primer no powder and a wax bullet. The guns were mostly aluminum other than the frames.

When " Shooters Set " is called you can have one hand on the gun but cannot move it. The off hand must be outside the line of the body. You can cock or fan with the off hand but it is slower to do it that way so no one does. Hits on the target/timer are equally important. If both hit the fastest time wins. If only one hits of course he wins the other gets an x . If both miss you re shoot that round. Most matches are shot to 3 X's so it usually come down to the next miss loses. The young shooters are required to use two hand hold and cock with the off hand as some of them are about to fall over holding up a 45 colt sixgun. Sweetpea .... 9 years old. The youngest allowed after a certification course. Everyone is watched closely adults included. Any infraction of the saftey rules will earn you an x , a loss of round or match disqualifaction. Don't let their age fool you. Inspite of being required to use two hands , the one on the left shoots in the 6's . .600

At a club match or for practice we use 45 Colt cases drilled for 209 shotgun primers and no powder. It's easier and a lot less expensive! The hosting club must provide the ammo for a Territorial , State or National match. The Idaho Shootists loaded 18 Thousand rounds of the ffg load for this match. We had less than 2 thousand left over. The powder loads are as much for the spectators ( and photographers ) as anything else. The actual velocity of the wax isn't appreciably different.

Huh, I might have to give that a try, do they allow guns converted from other calibers? Like say a 3 screw 357 converted to 45 Colt as long as I don't fiddle with the action?

Those kids are looking pretty darn serious there, that's gotta be tons of fun for them. Way to keep the old sixgun interest alive, too!

I attended one in Deadwood SD years back... everyone used black powder blanks fired at baloons at 7 ft. Exciting to watch.

Chutch,
I thought the low 4's was a good time but then I saw your post about starting with one hand on the gun. Does this apply to all shooters including adults?
I don't understand that. I thought Cowboy Fast Draw was created to more accurately portray the old cowboy. Why are they allowed to have a hand already on the gun?
I assume that the timer starts with a light so reaction time is included in the total time?
WFDA shooting is certainly different. For instance the picture of the two shooters with their arms extended way out in front of them; you don't see WFDA shooters doing that. It takes time to get your arm all the way extended like that. I guess that's why WFDA shooters shoot in the 2's.
I'm not knocking CFDA, I just don't understand the hand on the gun starting position. How is that a true old cowboy fast draw?

Cary, The " Lawman Ready " position allows for everyone to start in the same relative position. Due to the restrictions on equipment. CFDA was created to provide a safe , fun , affordable competition. WFDA is all about speed and competition , here that is a lower priority than having a great time! Ever barbecue a half of a Buffalo, feed 200 people and have a ton of leftovers? We Did! ;D The hind quarter removed and in the pot!

I need to give credit where credit is due. Tatonka Tom and his wife provided the Buffalo and did the cooking. Curly stayed up all night turning the spit by hand every half hour as the gear box broke! I did help build the frame and wheels the spit was on. We decided that it looked like a train tress el when we were done!
