What are your thoughts on pressure vs case capacity?
I'm hoping Lee can weigh in heavily on this. I doubt there is anyone else out there with as extensive experience of bottlenecked revolver wildcats.
Basicallly, my thoughts are that a straight wall cartridge can be pushed to higher pressures than a bottleneck cartridge, but the bottleneck has more powder in it at the lower pressure.
Specifically, I'm contemplating two next year conversions ; 1: A full size ruger with a .41 bore a) 1.4" 41 mag b) 44 mag necked to .41 ( .41 GNR) 2: a mid frame ruger with a .357 bore a) .360 DW ( 1.41" .357 mag) b) 41 mag necked to .357 ( .356 GNR)
Both would be six shooters. What are the thoughts on efficiency/performance/firearm life on these things? How much of the extra case capacity for the bottlenecks does my personal preference fr a 5.5" barrel waste? Let's say that both will have a second "conventional" (41 mag, 357 mag) chambered cylinder.

As far as my experience with rifle wildcats goes there's no correlation, but maybe Lee will chime in and set the record straight for all of us

I have loaded some of my 41GNR's 5 or 6 times. The only splits I get are due to my excessive crimping ( ) and probably less than 10 at that. I really like the 41GNR against deer and black bear size critters although I have no personal experience (YET) against black bears with this caliber. Mine has a 6 1/2" in barrel and I get just a little shy of 1700fps with a 170gr Sierra, and the load is 1.5grs less than max, but their isn't an animal out there that will be able to tell you lost a few fps cause you went with 5 1/2" provided you do your part. Brass is the 44mag so it's relatively easy to find. I love the 41GNR/170JHC combo and I know Gary speaks very highly of it. 41GNR vs. a whitetail doe 41GNR vs a mean little piggy
