A while back I bought a SKS from a co worker. It has a plastic folding stock and was $50 so I got it just to have something different laying around. My youngest son is smitten with this thing and wants to use it deer hunting. I had one of these things back in the early 90's when $100 got you a cosmolined greaseball and 5 boxes of shells. I scoped that rifle for my dad to use and never had a single problem. THIS rifle on the other hand has now destroyed 2 scopes. A Tasco 3x9 and a Simmons 9 point. I have had both of these scopes for a while and the Simmons served admirably on my Guide Gun and the Tasco on one of my 30-30's. Are these things scope eaters? And if so,why?

Maybe it's not the scope, but the craptacular mounting system that has failed?
What ammo you going to fling at deer?

Well the "craptacular" mount was a mess when I got it. I welded up the rails and refit it.it is as tight as I can get it. Oh and I am positive its the scopes,on the Simmons after the 4th shot the recticle had rotated almost 1/4 turn and on the Tasco the recticle also turned as well as fine wire of the bottom duplex broke at the middle. I used 123 grain softpoints on the deer I killed. This is going to be a 75 yard deer rifle at best, just want the scope because horrendous open sights. Thinking it might be the inertia of the bolt slamming back directly into the "scope mount".

I never had much luck with Simmons scopes myself. Try a better quality scope and see if it lives.

Yeah, I mounted a new 4x Simmons on my 10/22 and it died on the first outing. It was replaced under warranty, but I'd never take it on a hunt for fear it would fail again.

It's been my understanding that the guns do not offer a scope a good solid purchase. I would agree with this, I've owned a a half-dozen (or so). Chinese, Russian, Albanian, Yugoslavian, and Romanian (more than one of each from time-to-time).
If the scope mount is not secure, it would seem to me that the it might be shaken quite a bit during recoil. Firing might cause the scope to prematurely fail...certainly lower-end scopes might "feel the pain" sooner than an upper-end scope.
I have never understood putting a scope on an SKS.... they are (IMHO) a 100 yard gun. Open sights work pretty good. Beyond 100 yards, the guns I've owned started opening up too much for me to have confidence in any kind of grouping. Of course, a scope will give you this information faster than a 100 yard walk down-range.

What about going to some type of Scout Rifle type of set up/...That would move the mount off the reciever and on to the barrel..I had an SKS back in the 90's and it trashed a Scope too..

I agree with the 100 yard gun thing but we deer hunt out of a stand in the woods,I put scopes on the kids rifles for a bright clear sight picture.

I'm thinking duct tape and JB weld! Seriously, I have no SK anything experience. I see scope mounts for them listed in catalogues and haven't read any gloom and doom about them killing scopes.

Btw I solved the "problem" last night. I told Boogster I was tired of screwing with the little pos and if he wanted to deer hunt he was gonna put on his big boy long johns and use his mothers Ruger M77 Compact 7-08 or not deer hunt.
