The new Guns & Ammo has an article about a new Cartridge called the 50 B&M Alaskan. It looks basically like the 500 Martin. This gives new potential to the BFR for those who just have to have something even bigger than we can handle. The ease of doing a conversion of this nature which Lee pointed out years ago has new life with RCBS dies available already

Trust me when I say that it is simply too much. It can be shot, perhaps even mastered, but you can't divert even one iota of your attention away from it when shooting or it will bite you back. It is a novelty at best.

...cause folks are terrified of brown bears and seek solace in big guns...never mind all the bears killed with factory 45acp, 45 Colt, 9mmfmjs and 357s.... not to mention plain vanilla 44 mags...

I agree. It can be download but if that's the plan you're better off with a 500 Max. Some people like me enjoy working with big recoil. The whole mind over matter angle. But practically speaking it's too much for a revolver. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

My only shots fired in defense of life, have been to whack rattlers too close to habitation. Did come of age in a drainage where the state of Pa dumped their "bad bears". Never, thankfully, had to shoot one. I did become quite comfortable packing a SBH at all times. Shots were fired into the air, then into the ground. So far, never into the bear. Big dark growly thing were a common experience. It taught me to cuss like a sailor and chunk rocks like a pro. Everbody went home with their whole hide. YMMV. stevemb

Most folks won't become proficient enough at these recoil levels to take game. Breathing, sight hold, and trigger squeeze take a back-seat to preparing yourself for "the ride". Not saying it can't be done, but these cannons are way over the top at full throttle. Downloaded they can become manageable, but that defeats the purpose, right? Hell, a reduced 50 AK puts you into 500 Max territory (and that can be done on a much smaller platform). Whit posted this video of me shooting his a while back (525's @ 1,600 fps): Notice how I'm leaning into the gun and my forearms are flexed? I jokingly said it wasn't that bad, but trust me.....it comes back fast and hard. I'm fighting to hold the gun down in this clip. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

Personally I would prefer to deal with the bear than shoot a 50 B&M Alaskan.

I want a 50 Alaskan but I want it in a levergun. Wise man. I'm currently building one on a Siamese Mauser action: It's a great rifle round and a proven stopper. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"
