I'm seriously thinking of having a "Target Gray" Super Redhawk barrel shortened and there is an issue I hadn't thought of.
If I have the original sight re-affixed, it's probably going to damage the finish (it's soldered on).
Do I go with an aftermarket sight that attaches with fasteners or do I have it soldered on and try to deal with the finish issue some other way? Has anyone been able to duplicate the "Target Gray" (or whatever it's called) finish?
Maybe I just don't worry about it?
If I go aftermarket, do you have a suggestion?
Thanks

Anchoring with screw is only method known to me to avoid finish damage and/or mismatched colorations. Most smiths resort to polishing out or beadblast when drastic changes are made to target grey guns. The "alaskan-style" jobs i have did on .454s a brushed polish finish on crown complemented the factory finish well and satisfied both me and customers. Recently did a 4.25 chop job on .454 which required removal of part of barrel markings that remained at that length. Did a slabside treatment to barrel and beadblasted entire gun

i also have access to an industrial type vibratory finisher similar to what Ruger supposedly uses to achieve "target grey" finish with by tumbling in abrasive media. Widely used process in industry to deburr machined parts. I achieved an attractive satin grey color on sample stainless barrel but with media we use at plant on transmission parts i couldnt duplicate factory color

The factory sight and base would be pretty hard to beat, one thing that would HAVE to be reattached if I have one of mine modified.

have seen dovetail done on "alaskan type" chop jobs. I prefer a Wiegand base inletted on snout for those because gives customer easy blade exchange. Not alot of room behind spring loaded plunger on factory sights so any screw hole has to go in the sloped ramp area or you deal with solder, heat, discoloration and refinish to remount factory front
