I'm working on restoring a Virginian Dragoon, which has a color case hardened frame. I'm thinking about having the frame re-finsihed, and was wondering if there is any downside to having it case hardened again? Does this process occasionally ruin the metal, or can a competant refinisher avoid that?

Not that I know of, a lot of old Winchesters have been re-CCH with no problems, but I'd farm it out to be safe, might be something different with process

There is a potential downside some guns and or parts should not be case colored Turnbull will not do a pre 64 action as it can effect the actions hardness. There are other finishers that will do anything. I don't remember the specifics but I think it had to do with a pre 64 having a shallow surface hardness and the CC process would soften it.
Of course originally English and probably other gun makers used the process to harden the metal and if not polished, left the CC finish.
