Hi everyone. I'd like to do some more wildcatting, and was going to try out some long guns. Being on a budget, I was wondering what actions I should choose. I was thinking Enfield, K31, or Spanish Mauser. I like that the Enfield and K31 have detachable magazines. The straight-pull action of the K31 is appealing as well, I'm just not sure how hard they are to rebarrel... I know the mauser action is probably the strongest. But I am partial to the look of the Enfield... Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks. -K

Something like the 44 Rhino... I'd like to be able to use pistol components in a rifle. And have it be a fairly cheap project altogether... The 7.5 Swiss has a neck diameter that is the same as a 44 Mag, so I thought it might be fun to do a K31 in a 44 Long Automag kind of thing.

The K31 is a great rifle however you may have issues with the feed ramp from the magazine on a large number of cartridges. The magazine feed rails were to feed a 30 cal bullet with the case onto the feed ramps again creating a possible issue with a number of different cartridges that you may dream up. The bolt while being sturdy may not stand up to an over pressure load that you may create. The bolt face and extractor would be difficult to replace for a larger or smaller case head. I have them and I love the rifles.
Your Spanish mauser is a good action if you stay with the shorter cartridge cases and a rebarrel is not difficult.
The best of your suggestions would be the Eddystone Enfield P17 would be your best bet for a new design. Parts are available from a variety of places and it is a very strong design in general.
The least expensive and easiest to work with would be the faithful Remington 700 series of actions. The actions are strong, barrels are readily available and they have been wildcatted for years and there are parts everywhere.
If it were me I would be going with the short or magnum action Remington 700 for experimentation. The extractor is easy to change the barrels are easy to change and the trigger groups are so numerous that it is unreal. This action has seen so many different cartridges that it is spooky. So many stocks are available that there is probably a 100 year supply out there some where.
Go Dreamer Go!

Are you talking about a Lee-Enfield or a P17 Enfield? I your talking about the pattern 17, it's one of the strongest military actions out there. Bill

If using the Enfield which as suggested is a very strong action, look for a Remington or Winchester and avoid if possible the Eddystone due to the slight possibility of a weaker action. Stories of old said there were cracking issues with the Eddystone guns due to tight barrels that may have been removed, then rebarreled. May be nothing to it but still... Perhaps the strongest of all bolt actions is the Jap military action of WWII. Almost impossible to blow them up from what I have heard. Ugly though. The K31 is reputed to be not the strongest type of action either, though probably strong enough for most applications. I like shooting mine. Would love to find a Steyr M in the Swiss round. Would make a great hunting rifle.

Find a used Howa 1500, dirt cheap around here. Good action with decent aftermarket support.
