I was looking at the rifling in my new Bulldog and it looks rather shallow compared to my other handguns. Is this an issue when selecting the hardness of a cast bullet? Apologies for what is probably a dumb question.

Not necessarily, it will require some trial and error to determine for sure. The common idea is that you should have hard bullets for shallow rifling, but a lot depends on the bullet design and the load. I'd stick to the basics of bullet fit, and work up loads from there. Harder bullets can be a fix for shallow rifling, and you can certainly start out there if you're not the experimental type, but it may not be necessary.

Thanks for the help. I was beginning to think my question was so stupid that it didn't deserve a response.

Never looked a Bulldog in the snout, but 1911's are notorious for their shallow riflings. While they shoot hard cast primarily for feeding issues, My Kimber,Ruger,Taurus and CZ .45's shoot bullets of varying hardness quite well. In this case experimentation is a fine excuse for burning more powder!!
