Saw something today I've never encountered before. A friend bought it recently and showed it to me. It is a Crescent-Davis single shot pistol in 410 gauge. It is a break action with an external hammer, blued barrel, case hardened frame and hammer, nice wood pistol grip and fore stock. It is in very excellent condition, maybe 98%+. I understand it was manufactured in the late 20s and it is very sweet. Anybody know anything about these; rarity, value... It is an interesting piece and I'm curious.

Sounds pretty cool, although you got me on that one! I think Iver Johnson made something like that and they called theirs "The Snake Charmer" if my memory holds correctly??? I wonder if yours is a PRE-MODEL?

These were made before the firearms act, are not a "sawed-off" conversion, and are, I believe exempt. Only the ATF knows for sure..maybe. Don't think I'd use it for open carry until I found out. I've seen a couple but not in the last 40 years or so.

How can this be illegal when stuff like the Taurus Judge is OK?

Because it is rifled.

Im only 44 and I can remember ads for "Snake Charmers" a LONG time after '68. Not sure if they had a "fine print exception" like the Judge or not but they sold them.

H&R sells a small but legal size shotgun with a thumbhole/pistol-grip stock that they call the "Charmer". If memory serves correctly, only a few years ago, it was called the "Snake Charmer"

Thanks man,I had the thumbhole stock thing nagging at me bad, but alas I think the "snake charmer" was more than a mere few years ago, more like a few decades ago.

I remember the adds for Snake Charmers in the catalogs too. Sadly now they are illegal. Frank

Oops! MY bad. H&R calls their current little pistol grip shotgun the "Tamer", not the "Charmer". I do believe though that it is the same as their old "Snake Charmer".
Several decades ago eh? My, how the time flies when you're havin' fun.

Snake Charmers are not illegal. They were originally made with sort of a thumbhole stock that held 4 rounds under a trapdoor and an 18+ inch barrel. You could also buy a standard type stock. The metel was all stainless steel. They are very popular with halibut fisherman. Hope this helps. The. 410 pistol you may thinking about was called an Auto Burgler from the early part of th 1900's. Hope this helps.
