I'd like to file down the front sight on my Cimmaron revolver and perhaps serrate the side of it that faces the shooter. Is there an inexpensive way to do this at home without taking it to a gunsmith?

There is a simple rethreading tool available to auto mechanics that allows someone to repair the threads on a bolt without using a die. It has variable TPI (threads per inch) for cutting and is used by drawing or pushing the tool on a bolt. It's square and long, a four sided file if you will. I'll see if I can find a link sir. Lee probly has something in chest though....

I believe a checkering file is often used.

I have a cheap chinese needle file set that has at least one sharp edged file that I use. It doesn't do beautiful work, (at least not in my hands) but is adequate.

Thanks, gentlemen. Squawman, any idea what size one of those files I'd need?

I have both of the "external thread restoring files" Snap-On metric and SAE in my tool box, They work so good at their intended job that I bought a $300 set of thread chasing dies. That would be my last choice, even after using a needle file and making one serration at a time. They are not designed to cut,per se, they are to restore existing threads. The serrations in the tool are too far apart and not angled the same as a file. They are also rather large and unhandy to be working on something as small as a front sight. Save a headache and buy the checkering file.
