May be picking up a customized '03 with whay appears to be a x-hvy Shilen barrel, mounting a 20x Unertl. Former owner shot hi-power for the Navy in the 60's. The gentleman has passed, and his wife may be parting with it. If I remember correctly, because he and I talked about it in the past, it is a .30/.338 or it could just be a .338. Anybody out there have any experience with either of these calibers and/or long range hi-power? Any help would be appreciated, thanks, Coogs.

the 30-338 is a great old round. My dad shoots a lot of 308 Norma Magnum which is essentially the same thing. I prefer both over the 300 Win Mag because of the longer neck. Ours are very accurate at distance and it wasn't uncommon for the 30-338 to be used in 1,000 yard competition back in the day. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

I have both and I can't tell any difference at all! Both are accurate, and both are killers extraordinaire !

A couple of my friends in AK swore by their 30-338s. Very popular, still up there.

O.K., so I did get the rifle, bedded receiver, free float barrel, absoultley beautiful trigger, hardley any creep, very smooth, very light let off(didn't measure actual release yet) fine hair Unnertl 20x, full bull .30 caliber barrel, swear it weighs 16+ lbs.! Now, here is my problem, No Ammo! She didn't have any, or just can't find it yet. I'm pretty sure it is .30-338, but could be a .300 Win Mag. Could somebody out there spare an empty, .30-338 casing? I'll be happy to buy it and pay for shipping. Send me a PM, haven't had any luck finding one locally. Thanks in advance for you help, Coogs.

Coogs....great find. You forgot to mention that's it's topped with a Unertl My dad used to use that glass on all of his benchrest rifles up through the late 80's. Around that time Unertl switched to government contracts only. Let me see if my dad has a spare 308 Norma case (it's close to 30-338). If he does, I'll send it your way. Just PM me your address. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"
