What is or was the deal with the Turnbull Open Range revolvers? I got one a couple years back at what I believe was a bargain from a fella. I've not shot, and I've tie wrapped the hammer. I am unable to find people with knowledge about them. Is it a parts set colored by Turnbull and renamed? Is there anything secret or special about them? I've got a usfa that was colored by Turnbull, but it doen't have the bull on it. Thank you in advance gentlemen.

Those are worth nothing. Send them to me and I will dispose of them.

Can't blame me for trying!

From my understanding, If I remember correctly, they got the raw parts from USFA. They did all the fitting, polishing, and finishing themselves. Put there stamp and serial number on the revolvers as the manufacturer, and sold them as a Turnbull firearm. I hope I remembered this correctly. The info comes straight from Turnbull's shop. I try to stop over there at least once a year to look around and talk to the folks there. I too have an open range revolver in .45 lc. Shot it once, cleaned it and now it sits in the safe. Not because I want to keep it pristine, but because I prefer to hunt/carry my .44 special. I'm hoping they will increase in value from what I paid over the years, but one never knows.

The Open Range reveolvers were similar to Turnbull's previous offering, the Cowboy Classic. Both were basically USFA guns. I have two of the Cowboy Classics, which as I recall came with two piece USFA black plastic grips, although one of mine now has one piece ivories by Nutmeg and the other has Grashorn elk grips. The Open Range guns came with one piece walnut. My guns have DT or Doug Turnbull serial numbers. Not sure about serial numbers on Open Range guns. I have not noted the fit and finish to be any different from other USFA guns that I own. I note on the Turnbull site, the Open Range guns are listed as "out of stock" as apparently, not even Turnbull is having much luck getting guns out of USFA these days.

You are correct that Turnbull builds their guns from USFA parts, so are subject to the lack of availability of parts that is being experienced at USFA. They ran out completely of the standard frames, and have only a few (literally) black powder frames left. They are currently building me a 5" with full length ejector housing, but that will probably be the last of them until USFA's production picks up. The difference? I own both (USFA & Turnbull) and the DT you are getting hand fitting (not that USFA lacks), one piece walnut grips, and original armory bluing. Here's two other DT's that I own, a 45 Colt... and another in 357 Mag...

I see you have the bisley hammer on the top one. At DT, they told me they could no longer get the bisley hammer as there supplier went into contract with another manufacturer so would no longer be able to sell them to DT.

They were both specific (custom) builds for me. They ran out of the Bisley hammers a year ago. I'm not sure if they get them from USFA or not (I think they do) but Gary at USFA gave the same response - it'll be a looong time before they have more.
The nice thing about DT's custom builds is that you can get anything you want. These even have custom serial numbers that I requested.

gk2410,
Those are some of the prettiest revolvers I've ever seen. I love how the lines flow together and the little extra touches like the front sights. Very, very nice. Thank you for sharing them with us!
