Saw an Iver Johnson Cattleman 44 mag at the LGS the other day . Would probably be about 275 to 300 out the door. How do these rate in the Italian clone world. This one had the adjustable sights and I think about a 6 1/2" barrel and a brass gripframe. Looked to be "little used". I don't really need it, but-------------------------------------------------

I had one of these long ago, about 1975 or 1976. My gun was beautifully fitted and finished. Felt pretty much like a Ruger in size.
Two problems I had: The front sight was WAAAAY too short, making the gun shoot too high for me. (The man I sold it to reported no trouble in that respect.) And the gun lacked a recoil plate, so that the firing pin left a puckered-up little crater after a few rounds. The primer would flow back into this and bind up cylinder rotation. Kept me filing this down for awhile.
I think later guns have a hardened recoil plate, or firing pin bushing, now.
These my experiences.

Bob, you're correct. Iver Johnson later had Uberti switch to a larger recoil plate. Overall, the 44 Mag Cattlemans were well built guns. I've heard of timing issues, but the ones I've handled were spot on. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"
