I put another 100 rounds through my 475 BFR today and hit a milestone.....namely 3,000 shots since I bought the gun new in 2003 for $800. The only loads I've used are 27.0 grains of H110 under 420 LFNs or 400 grain jacketed Speers. In other words, heavy stuff. And in that time I've never had as much as a screw come loose. These guns are really built to last and their accuracy is jaw-dropping. Today's session was the 420 LFN and 27.0 of H110. After 9 years of being shot hard it's still dead on: 10 shots @ 25 yards: I then re-sighted it at 50 yards and got 5-shot groups like these: I can't say enough about the out-of-box potential of these guns. So after 3,000 rounds mine is going to get a facelift: 1) Jack Hunington grip extension with white micarta, 2) Barrel cut back to 6.0", and 3) Alpha Precision front sight kit. I'll keep you all posted. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time

Hang in there fellas!

Nice shooting there Lee! Any issues with the trigger guard hitting your trigger finger. Unfortunately its what lead me to sell mine. Even after Huntington did the great job of reshaping the grip.

Nice, your changes sound perfect.
Hows the cylinder end-float? I keep the cylinder oiled up but my 500S&W has gotten pretty sloppy over the years.
Gun still shoots better than I can hold.

I was shooting mine today too. It groups about like that also. I have some better, some worse. Only have about 200rds through mine and it wears an UD30 like Jim's.

I think Lee is going to have Jack retrofit a Bisley grip frame to his BFR. I am doing the same with mine. Nice job, Lee! Dang, that thing has a rifle barrel! ;D

It might could be done. The Bisley grip frames I have tried for fitting on a BFR were more narrow than the mainframe. The mainframe itself would have to be to be surface ground a bit one either side. Then you have the issue of a Bisley hammer and trigger. Not sure if the Ruger parts would work. Still, with a bit of welding the BFR parts themselves could be modified....
Be kind of nifty to flattop the topstrap and cut a dovetail in it as well. With a little sculpting ala Ruger OM Single Six it would be pretty nifty. Theres also no reason the frame couldnt be scalloped and or the cylinder cut with long flutes. Hmmmm.....

Bigbores, some of the top smiths are press fitting a bushing in the front of the cylinder on some of the bigger hammer sixguns to address the endshake. Harton has been doing that for sometime.

I had Alan Harton work over a Huntington extended grip frame leaning it down some for and aft and really reworking the clubby grips that came with it. It is now much more comfortable to shoot than my Nimrod which does thump my knuckle. Alan also cut the barrel to 5 1/2" and made and fitted the barrel sleeve for the express look and functionality then fit the Weigand sight. Given the overall "blockiness" of the BFR I went with the equally blocky Weigand front sight. Also, with the barrel cut the factory lettering looked wrong so he removed it and did a simple caliber remark. It is now far easier to shoot and, like the others, is extremely accurate though I only shoot the 400 gr WLN to loaded 1100 fps. When I get home I need to give some of Sixshot's 380 gr HP's he sent a bit ago. I still need to find a holster for it, any suggestions?

It is done, Fermin, it's just a lot of work -- unlike the old D-Max framed BFRS where it was a bolt on. I just really dislike the grip frame of the BFR. It is better with the big rubber grips as they change the grip angle considerably, but they are still no Bisley....... ;D

With a TIG welder and steel most anything is possible. Here's a Bisley gripframe that I added to a BFR. And here's a SBH that inspired the BFR

Your SBH grip frame looks to keep ones finger much further away than the Bisley one does. I found the same with my BFR above and my Bisley 500 Linebaugh.

I think Lee is going to have Jack retrofit a Bisley grip frame to his BFR. I am doing the same with mine. Actually Whit, I'm not going pure Bisley. I've never liked how they look even when you mate 'em to the JT BFRs. I plan of having Jack do this again (not sure who this BFR belongs to, but it was posted here a few years back): The only difference is I plan to use one of 2Dogs custom front sights and the barrel won't be octagonal. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

He does do a grip frame extension -- I have a picture of a gun that has it done that I will post later. It is a good alternative.
