Yeah, the outdoor range I go to, owned and run by the Army base, but open to civilians, no longer will allow my .45-70,since that round is listed as a rifle round. Regardless that it's velocity is less in a handgun and less than a .500 Mag handgun which is allowed! I didn't have it at the range today, but was given the notice, while shooting the .44 Mag Hunter. Got away with it almost a year though.

Blanket rules make no sense sometimes. In Oregon, you're good to go for elk hunting with any centerfire rifle or handgun 25 caliber or larger. I guess it's the 25 auto Beretta 950BS for me this year.

You've got to wonder who makes the rules. Obviously someone uninformed.

It almost sounds like they couldn't wait to inform you of this rule,...
I wonder if someone complained about the muzzle blast, or simply got jealous, if it were me I would get a 500S&W BFR with the same barrel length, take it to the range and just wait for someone to tell you, you can't shoot your 45-70. ;D ;D ;D
In-fact I would smile show off the new revolver and thank them for giving me a reason for buying another BFR! (then again, I'm a few clicks off center)
I simply hate when people tell me I can't do something when they have now good reason behind there rules.

Years ago near Baton Rouge LA, a sheriff's department officer stopped a group of us shooting on an informal range and asked if any of us were shooting 44 magnums. He said the 44 magnum was banned on the range as someone had hit a mobile home about a quarter mile away with a stay shot from a 44 magnum. I was shooting a 300 winchester magnum and there was a 7mm magnum and a 30-06 being shot as well. They were ok. Makes you wonder who thinks up the rules.

It does make you wonder who comes up with this stuff.

The guy that manages the range, was kind enough to give me a break, when I first brought it there last year. He said just say it's a real long .45 Colt. It may have been one of the firing line workers, who ratted us out to higher brass. Anyway,I'll just enjoy it on occasions when I get invited to shoot at private ranges in the woods. If I had the funds,I would love to open an outdoor range where shooting/recycling plastic water filled jugs and other items, with ANY caliber handgun would be welcome! The Ft.Lee range is a great deal at 5 bucks per hour though. Wish I could shoot S&W .460 Mag in this gun with just a cylinder swap, but no such luck.

When you are on a military base and you experience "rules" why would that surprise anyone? I'd expect them to be much sillier than that. I used the Camp Lejeune Range a few times and I also experienced some BS from "Range officials" but when in Rome....
I am blessed to be able to walk over the hill and shoot all day in a lot of different areas. I'd go a little nuts if I had to pay 5 bucks an hour to shoot too! I do have to agree that the 45-70 ain't no revolver round ;D but I'll be damned if I'm gonna limit YOUR choices in life!
Makes me respect what I have access to that much more but some of the posts here complaining about rules on a military base just make me wonder what you thought happened when you enter a military facility...
