Two of my super blackhawks become unlocked when I shoot full power loads in them. I have a 5 1/2 super with fluted cylinder that doesnt but my 4 5/8 and 7 1/2 with unfluted cyliders do. If I take a lighter grip on them they stay locked but with a firm grip when I go to recock them the cylider is out of alignment slightly and the bolt is out of the notch. On both the bolt springs seem fine, could my grip be too firm? Has anyone else experienced this with unfluted cylinders? It hasnt caused any problems but worries me.

I've never experienced this problem on a bh or sbh neither has anyone else I know with these guns. I had a similar problem to this on my sp101. It turned out to be the bolt was rounded off when it was build and the cylinder would unlock and rotate the opposite direction.

It sounds like the base pin is moving. Does it move forward under recoil or is it excessively sloppy? I had a Colt with a week base pin screw retainer spring and it would jump ahead and the cylinder would go out of time. Just my 2c.

Just a thought, but have you installed reduced power mainsprings in them?

Thanks everyone, the base pins are fine and both guns are fully stock. Ive shot them for years without noticing, in fact I kept forgetting to look while I was testing them. But it is happening now that Im paying attention. I even streched one of the bolt springs but it didnt help. Both guns are tight and the bolt pressure feels very possitive on both. I supose it could be the shape of the bolt but they appear the same as all my rugers. I wonder if the added enertia of the unfluted cyliders is causing them to bump out of lockup. Like I stated it doesnt happen with a one handed or slightly loose two handed grip.

Seems very odd to me that you have two Rugers doing the same thing. I had a 500 Linebaugh that did this but it was only one chamber. I traced it to one bolt notch that was not machined deep enough. Have you tried marking the cylinder to see if it happens to only one chamber on each?

Locking bolt wear. Most likely the bolts leading edge at top is slightly rounded. It should be knife edge sharp. A bit of stoning should fix it. If not, replace bolts.
