Now.... Where is Ken O'Neill? If I remember right he uses a mount that comes from one of his local Carolina gunsmiths..

I wasn't going to chime in, Stan, but since you've asked, I'll make a few comments. I don't use the Lovell, but that's only because the early ones turned to a darker gray after a while, and I just didn't like the aesthetics of that color. They do have a clean look. I'm told that the current ones retain their original color pretty well, but I don't have any to prove it. I have a couple T'SOB's in service. They are excellent - strong, durable, and well made. Someone on here once said they look a bit "industrial". That's a clever description, and true, but I generally like them, except when there's a bunch of base protruding out in front of the front ring (none of my FA's are set up that way). Here's an example of a T'SOB and 2X Leupold set up so there's no excess base hanging out. This works with a 2X Leupold, but not a 4X: Most of my FA scope bases were custom made by my friend and local pistolsmith Gordon Logan. They are a little bit higher than a T'SOB. When he makes them, I know what scope I'm going to use (either a 2X or 4X Leupold in the pre - 1993 vintage, the color of which matches the FA Field Grade finish pretty well) , and how many Leupold vetically split rings I'll use. Each ring cross cut is made in the appropriate place, and there are no extra cross cuts and no extra overhang in the front. He's made several different configurations for me. My 3 and 4 ring set ups are secure, the scopes don't break, and they don't rotate or slide. Here's a 4 ring on a .475 L: And one on a .500 WE / .50 AE convertible: And a 3 ring version on a .22:

Looks like we now have this scope question tied up in a nice tidy bundle....

I got around the Lovell mount color fade by having one anodized to match my blued 414 that I had the topstrap remade to match a FA. Now if I can just get the silver / blued scope swap pulled off it will be an all dark colored set up.
