Picked this up earlier this year (May-ish). Was originally looking for a big bore cartridge gun in the 44/45 flavor or a cheap 41 if it came along. I didn't have a big bore cartridge gun at the time either so I wasn't going to be to picky either, if it was bigger then a 357 and could launch a hunk of lead at something respectable it was going home. So I started hitting up the local haunts looking through the used Items. Wasn't seeing anything of my liking, had seen a couple that fit the criteria but had been in stainless and stainless is always my option B finish so I decided to hit up one more spot. Well the last place I hit up they had some 45's but all on SAA sized actions and I realy wanted a Ruger if I was going to go with a 45. But on the bottom shelf in the back corner there appeared to be a 41 blackhawk. Upon closer examination, it was a Herter's Single Six. It had originally been marked $395 but had been dropped in price several times. As I was told it had been sitting on the shelf for a very long time and was being priced down to move. So it grabbed my interest and I had to check it out. Butter smooth trigger and action, locks up solid as a bank vault. What was the catch I was wondering. Price on loaded ammo was the catch, but hey for the price I couldn't go wrong even if I had to buy dies. So I get filling out the paperwork and the guy behind the counter tells me there is some more stuff that goes with the gun. He drags out this old shopping bag and in it we have a set of dies, the original grips and 200 rounds of ammunition. Boy was I ever tickled pink. So out the door plus the govenors cut for a total of $195 I had myself a .401 Power Mag.

Wow....the dies and brass alone are worth over $200. Quite a find. I'm really into those old Powermags and have been shooting them for years. I'll think you'll like your 401 once you get it to the range. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Cool score! Looks like south-paw grips on it. Is this cartridge the same as the 41 mag?

If you aren't a lefty, I would be seriously interested in acquiring those grips for my Powermag. Let me know please. And congratulations on your purchase.

Its grooved on both sides. The thumb rest appearing thing on the right side of the revolver is a large impression for the base of the index finger. They are very very comfy. So far I've been running 180 grain cast truncated cone bullets through the gun at 1100 fps and 1350 fps. The slower of the two being the more accurate of the two but both are usable at the 50 yard mark. Mind you my shooting is nothing to right home about at that distance but hey. Load is using IMR4227 at 20.5 grs and 22.5 grs respectively. 1.600 OAL. Im thinking of working the load a little heavier as 1450 fps should be acheviable in a 6.5" gun.
