I have my first .357/38 & .45 Colt SA Revolvers on order and I am hoping to receive them late this week.
Over the last week or so, I have been checking out, the various .38 Spl. & .45 Colt Ammo that is available from online vendors. Dam, the .45 Colt is expensive! I was planning on shooting my .45 a lot more than it looks like I’ll be able to afford. With some of the best prices, I can find, I can get 500 rounds for about $300/$325 plus S&H. I can get 500 rounds of .38 Spl. for half that price. For me, I figure 500 rounds for each gun, equals about 3 visits to the range.
Many years ago, I use to reload .44 Spl. & Mag. For the 3 guns I once owned but those guns and the reloading equip have been gone for over 20 years now. I may have to consider doing some reloading again and I am feeling too old for that.
Anyway, to my question “What works best” what I mean by that is which commercial loads have work best for you, based on brand, bullet weight and bullet shape? Most of the single action revolvers out there have fixed sights. Are they fixed based on point of aim, at X number of feet, with certain bullet weights?
Any and all input will be very much appreciated.

If it weren't for reloading, I wouldn't be able to afford shooting. The Winchester "white box" at WalMart is usually the best for .38's, Remington has a bulk pack that's comparable. I couldn't tell you on .45 Colt as I've never bought a factory round of it.
For the cost of a few boxes of ammo you can get a very basic reload setup and shoot a whole bunch more.

I shoot Magtech 200gr lead flat nose through my 1875 Outlaw and Winchester .38spl in the white box through my Cimarron Pistolero. I don't know a darn thing about reloading but, wish I had someone who could teach my how for the .45.

For high performance .45 Colt, I like Double Tap's offerings (really like the 360 grain load) and I like Grizzly Cartridge's heavy cast + P loads.

I think you need to reload or find a friend and do so for 45 long colts at retail that will break fort knox...You can reload a box for $10.00 plus or minus...fwiw

I really agree with John on reloading for someone else. It's opening yourself up for trouble.
Teach them to reload, it's not hard, but you do need to pay attention. I think the first purchase should be a good loading manual or 3. The Hornaday 8th edition mentioned is a good one. I really like the Speer #14 & the Lyman #49 too. Frank

Whitworth,
I have no doubts that the ammo you mentioned is outstanding for hunting, but far too expensive for simple target shooting. Also, as has been mentioned, the .45 I have coming is a Taylor Smoke Wagon, with the parts being made in Italy. Those rounds are probably too powerful for that gun, as several have pointed out!
Orkie,
Does the .45 Colt 200 grain Magtech round shoot pretty much to point of aim within 50' or less? Have you ever shot the Magtech 250 grain? If so, does it shoot pretty much to point of aim within 50' or less?
Man oh man, it does certainly sound like I may have to start reloading, once again, after over 20 years. I had a Lee's Single Stage Set-Up back then, where you had to change the dies, etc, to go from one stage to the next. I recall working with 100 rounds at a time as I went through the process, except for priming the brass. I took a quick look, and I see that they have turret type set ups with the various stages all set up. Does anyone use something like that?
I agree 100% with those that have spoken out against reloading for someone else!
Has anyone ever used .45 Colt Ammo from Georgia Arms?

Johnny, I have not shot the 250gr Magtech. I do however love the accuracy of the 200gr and it pretty much hits p.o.a. from my 1875. But to me, the 1875 is a more accurate pistol than my '73 clone. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

No doubt. I tend to approach from this direction. I also feel they are way to hot for the application. That said, you really need to start reloading!
