Just snapped this picture this morning and I really like it. Son is 6. His patience wore out before the deer showed up, but thats ok, we had a grand time.

Thats cool!! Pictures and memories like that will far outlast the biggest buck. A buddy of mine had one of those in 45/70 I dont know how hot he had it loaded, primer and case were almost one in fired case, but that was the hardest I had ever been kicked in my life untill like a complete moron I shot a #1 Tropical in 458 Win Mag

My Hornaday manual has 45/70 loads for "Ruger Only" that I had to try. In that little rifle they leave a mark. I usually stick to 300 grain bullets for deer and they are not too bad. 405 cast bullets at 1900 are a handful. These are great woods rifles, short and natural pointers.

All I really remember is a dull ache and blurred vision, especially with the .458....

The little Ruger No3 was a bit exuberant with full house loads. I never found the No1 to be all that bad.
On the other hand, my Cajun wife just got to shoot my friends No1 in 458 Lott. I had a hard time getting it away from her to give back to him. She rather liked it. I was informed on the way back home that she still hasn't gotten her 416 Rigby yet.......( taps foot and stares) I know I promised it long ago. I'll have to correct that soon.
By the way, Great picture. The 45-70 was my father and I's first gun project together. Long, long ago. Fond memories now flooding back.

I couldn't resist a .45-70 barrel for my Handi Rifle, though it knocks the snot out of me with a stout load! Love the .45-70, even in light weight single shots. I cannot even imagine a .458 in a rifle that size though... yowee!

Great pic...what memories are made of. My smokeless load with the 535 gr. Postell bullet moves along at 1600 fps and 1550 fps with the 500 gr. Barnes TSX. Rifle weighs 13 lbs. so it's not bad...course that curved, steel buttplate will sure bite you if ones not careful.
