Anybody own one? How do you think they compare to the other 500's? I would like to have a 500L, but kinda wondering if I can afford it. I might be able to come up with the money for a FA 500AE or Wyo.

I don't have a 500WE but I have 2 model 83s in 50AE, I really like them, one of the guys here helped me with some load data for the revolver and its fast becoming one of my favorite round/gun combo's. I'm going to send off both guns to FAs at some point for 500WE cylinders but I'm in no hurry.

You can get into a BFR in .500 JRH for relatively little money.

I agree with Whitworth. Though the 500 WE can be roll crimped, the 50 AE can not and is not a very good revolver cartridge IMO. On the other hand, the 500 JRH can be purchased directly from Magnum Research and can perform better than either of the other two cartridges. My plan is to get a BFR in this cal. soon

Whitworth is right, there is a couple a ways to go about getting one fairly cheap. Order one from MRI for around $1000 get a 50AE BFR for around $800 after shipping from gunbroker, then if you want send it in for a 500JRH cylinder. Lastly you can keep you eyes out for a used freedom arms model 83 in 50AE, they seem to sell cheaper then other FAs guns, I picked one up for $900 then had the white grips added. If you want send it to FAs for a 500WE cylinder or send it to Jack Huntington for a 500JRH cylinder it will be cheaper if you can come up with a 454 cylinder but jack can make the cylinder if needed. If you don't mind keeping bullet weights down below 350GRs the 50AE works great in the revolvers, and the brass and reloading dies are cheap for a 50Cal.

razor, The .500WE is a superb cartridge. Accurate, easy to load to full power, easy to download to mid-range loads. It is a practical field performance duplicate to the .500 JRH and .475 and .500 Linebaughs. It is superior to the .50AE, and in fact was created out of a desire to remedy some of the AE's shortcomings. I will also say however, that if a person will be satisfied with a 325-350 @ 1100 fps, the AE is just fine. Accurate, mild, and a real hog killer.

I mentioned on another thread that as far as I know, the company who was producing brass for the 500 wyoming has gone out of business. I'm not sure how this will affect the future of the cartridge, but if it was me I'd buy a fair supply of brass along with the gun.

Kens the man when it comes to the 500WE, he also knows a thing or 2 about the 50AE when used in a revolver! makes some great front site blades for the FAs gun!

Anybody own one? How do you think they compare to the other 500's? I would like to have a 500L, but kinda wondering if I can afford it. I might be able to come up with the money for a FA 500AE or Wyo. Selling a FA ported 454 and using the cash, part of it anyway, for a new 500WE was one of the best buying decisions I have made. I feel proud to own this gun, as well as my convertible 454 4 3/4". There's a satisfaction in shooting a firearm that has remained unchanged over so many years. Pretty much one model, with a few caliber variations. When I read this thread and the bit about Freedom's WE brass becoming scarce, I immediately phoned 'em. I was assured there would be no problem supplying shells for their cartridge either now or in the future. Razor, within the last few months I have purchased 3 cases of 64 shells and never had a problem with shipments. Actually, I had a split casing on one of them, spoke to one of their gunsmith about it, and within 3 days received an additional case of brass--free of charge. John, the 'smith, stated he'd have it no other way. A few months back a guy ranted on another board about Freedom going out of business due to a few lawsuits an wanted to know who was buying their business. After I heard that nonsense, I ordered an octagon barrel on the 500. After about a week or two, she was shipped back to the FFL, ready for pick-up. If they were really insolvent I think it 'd be highly unlikely I'd get it back so soon.--and they probably would have kept the cash. I believe in the integrity of Freedom and will support them in all future gun purchases.I think you should too. The comment about the 50AE commanding a lower price relative to other '83s was a good one. But,the thing is, even if you found a used Premier or a Field grade for $1,100.00, which I think is a real good price, by the time you add the price of another 500WE cylinder, shipping, and FFL charges you're probably bordering in the price of a new FA field grade 500WE. I just wouldn't do it. Buy new, and support a small company that deserves it I sold a real nice guitar and a gun to get that WE, but I never regret the decision. I look forward to reloading and shooting it at the range every weekend. 11/10: Struggled at getting the Pic of the 500 posted--apologies. I think this is selecting the link below is a roundabout way of seeing it: s1184.photobucket.com/albums/z331/Benny1232/
