I are now a cool kid with a Herter's of my own. You were right Aggie - it's marked "44 Cal".
Needs a good cleaning, grips and maybe a new base pin. Not sure it's original.
Not a lot of work to be cool.

If the base pin is rough / scarred up and hard to remove, it probably IS original. I have seen a couple reports that they were very difficult to deal with.

Herters are notorious for bad base-pins. Most were poorly finished and were prone to rust. I made new pins for all of my Powermags except one. Some polishing though on the factory version will fix the problem. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Will a Ruger or Colt pin from belt mountain work or would it take a custom dimension pin?

I was going to see what sorts of pictures I could find to see what the original base pins looked like for comparison. This one has markings consistent with the use of a file. It's not hard to get out so it may not be original. I gave it a good bath with Hoppe's and Gun Blaster last night but ran a little short of time to measure it or look for pictures. If it's the same diameter as a Ruger, I may try one of those (or a Base Mountain). If not, I'll probably have to have one made (I haven't looked for parts but my guess is they're not available).
One issue that concerns me a little is that the cylinder has a little more movement along the base pin than I'd like. I was thinking that I can probably put a shim on the muzzle end of the cylinder (I'll check the B/C gap first). There's no indication of work on the cylinder and it cleaned up nicely so I hope there's no real problem. Is this the correct way to address this?

The correct way is to shoot it first and see what she does . If you decide you need a custom base pin, I'd be willing to bet the dimensions are close enough that KS can hook you up.
