I just got a Herter's over on GB. Are there any pitfalls to look out for when checking one of these over?
In addition a question for Mr. Taffin: Referencing Taffin Tests the .38-40; "Since I had two Herter's .401 Powermags, ... I found a standard-sized single action grip frame and ebony grips to replace the comfortable, but cumbersome PowerMag grip frame."
Was this a straight-forward swap or a skilled gunsmith only proposition?

I DON'T KNOW OF ANY PROBLEMS CONNECTED TO HERTER'S POWER MAGS. JUST LOOK IT OVER AS YOU WOULD ANY SA. THE SWAP WAS STRAIGHTFORWARD; SO EASY I COULD DO IT..

Mr. Martin, I have read that article quite s few times. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. In fact, that article is what got me hankering for one. I'm a sucker for the underdog.

Glad you liked it. Herters might be an underdog, but they're a really well built single-action. You got a deal at $320. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I've run across a Herter's that'sin decent shape (from the pictures). Price is a little less than Aggie's gun but it's a 44 Mag, I think (somehow the guy doesn't seem to know).
This probably ain't a Powermag. Question is: Is it worth it? (I don't have a Herter's...)

Yes, depending on condition, the book at work has the Herter's guns (and it doesn't break them down by caliber) in the 400-1000 range depending on finish wear and mechanical condition

You should get it just to have something to make your friends look at you funny when you show it off with pride. You can always put it on gunbroker with a Herteresque description if you hate it. I heard a rumor all the cool kids were getting a Herter's,so I got mine.

Herters single-actions don't start low-end at $400 and go to $1,000. Most Herters in good to very good condition go for around $250 - $300. Excellent is $400 or so, and like new brings $450 - $500. -Lee www.singleactions.com

it's a 44 Mag, I think (somehow the guy doesn't seem to know). Had a thought - the guy many not know if it's a .44 MAG, because they were only marked .44 CAL. But the Herter's .44 CAL is a .44 Mag.

The book I looked at was a guide to rare and obscure arms, and this may be a case of book value and what they're selling for being way out in lef tfield from one another, it's happened before
