David Clements emailed today to say that my OM Blackhawk in .41 Special is ready. I will send the moolah tomorrow and should have photos in the very near future. This will be my 3rd Clements Ruger, soI know what to expect (he did my son's 1st custom OM Blackhawk when Steven was 12 or so). Any ideas on a good all-around .41Spl load?

I started with 5 grs Unique and a 215 gr cast bullet and it works great. I have some more 41 Special load data I have gathered from JT and a few others if you are interested. Just PM me and I'll see what I can find in my files.

I would dig out Taffin's article on the original .41Spl Colt SAA for load data. Seems there were some good ones in there 900-1200fps.

I have a Bowen conversion OMBH to 41 Special. Nice shooter. 5.8 grs W-231 behind a 210 gr. Montana Bullet Works SWC is a good load. In fact, I have been using more W-231 in several calibers as it meters well, burns clean and is as accurate as any other powder I have tried. Also like Lee's use of Green Dot for the same reasons. I acquired 350 new cases of Starline 41 Special brass a while ago. Together with what I have reloaded so far that is many more brass than I will use in the rest of my lifetime, so would be willing to part with 200 cases.

Glad to hear others are using Green Dot. I switched to it a few years back when there was a run on powder and I couldn't get Unique. Bought 8 pounds and have found it to duplicate Unique speeds with 1 grain less charge. Burns cleans and is accurate across a wide range of calibers too. -Lee www.singleactions.com

mhblaw: Thanks for the offer. Who made the brass? If you would rather, PM me with the details.
Also, what do I need to do for dies? I emailed RCBS about .41Spl dies, but haven't gotten a response yet (just sent it yesterday).
I found Brother Taffin's articles on the .41Spl, too. The gun should be here next week or so, and as soon as I get the dies squared away, I will be ready to go. Any details on how much to trim the seating die down to work on Specials?

I took my 41 Mag die along with a 357/38 Special spacer ring down to the local machine shop and had them shorted the seating die the same amount of the spacer ring so the dies work just like 38/357 adn 44 Special/44 mag. Cheap and easy.

my favorite was 7 grains of unique and a 210 swc. That was a top end load in mine but mine was a single six conversion. Your blackhawk will take much more.

For the rest of you 41 Special fans, try the Hornaday New ? die set for the 41 Magnum. The sizer is carbide, the expander can be adjusted for the shorter case and the seater has a floating insert that can be adjusted to crimp the bullet on the shorter case. Much easier than trimming some other dies.

Alright...now we are cooking!! MidwayUSA is sending the Hornady dies, an RCBS shellholder and Redding .41 collet for my trimmer and 500 LaserCast .41 cal 210 grainers to get started. I have powder and primers and cases will be en route shortly. I printed the info from Mr. Taffin so I have load data, in addition to what is here.
