I just returned from a Wyoming hunt for pronghorn antelope on the Durham Buffalo Ranch near Wright, about 30 miles south of Gillette. Pronghorn populations on the ranch are down significantly this year as shown by the ranch's own population surveys. The ranch staff vigorously and intensively manages game populations. As a result, only 5 pronghorn hunters were permitted by the ranch this year as opposed to 20-25 in previous years. We did see plenty of pronghorn, though, and all 5 hunters were able to handgun a buck. This 4 1/2 - 5 year old buck was shot after a long period of watching and waiting followed by an exciting 350 yard stalk. I was able to get to a surprisingly close 125 yards. At the shot, the buck ran just a few yards and dropped, dead. I used a 14" Contender in .257 JDJ and 100 gr. Ballistic Tips.

Great buck! I was fortunate enough to go on the 2010 HHI hunt and had the time of my life.

cmnash, As you know, Gregg Richter does a good job of coordinating that hunt. I had last hunted on the Durham Ranch 20 years earlier, on the 5th HHI hunt. Because of the reduced number permitted to hunt this year, this hunt was done as the "First Little Gun Outfitters Invitational Antelope Hunt", rather than an HHI hunt. Hopefully the pronghorn poulation is on the rebound quickly enough, so that the 25th HHI hunt can be held soon.
