Long time lurker first time poster. I recently got a BFR in 45/70 and I am wanting to try some different grips on it. I am leaning towards something by Hogue. I am assuming that anything that will fit a super black hawk will fit the BFR. Am I right? My gun has a JT serial #.

I wouldn't assume that. That may have been the case for a DM-framed gun but if you remove your present grips they may reveal something interesting on the inside. Mine look almost as if a SBH injection mold was modified to create my JT grips.
Just trying to give you something until a better authority comes along...

Pachmayr decelerators fit on myJT, but they leave some gaps and look less than great because of it. I have not fired it since I put them on, but the are smaller in girth than the Uncle Mike's that come on them and feel better for my medium glove size hands. The Hogues are very large and might work if you have large or extra large hands.

Thanks for the feed back and for the welcome Frank V. This is a great forum. I enjoy all the knowledge on here and really like the gun porn too. Single action porn is my favorite. The uncle mikes that came with the gun say Super Black Hawk on the inside so I was wondering. Subsonic, the Uncle Mikes don't fit very well around the trigger guard either. I don't have a SBH to compare to and of course my Black Hawk is way different than a SBH. Any body care to post a picture of a nekked Super Black Hawk grip handle?

Thanks Tek. Now I can really see what I'm up against. Perfect way to demonstrate the fit or in this case the lack there of. I would really like to see how your grips come out once you have them back from the maker. Thanks again.

I fired my .475 with the Pach Decellerators. They work good and fit my hand well. The fit to the frame is acceptable for a rubber grip.
I would recommend them for anyone that doesn't have larger than normal hands. I'd tell those guys to try the hogues, or be happy with the uncle mike's that come on the BFR.

To me, the grips that come with the BFR are about as good as you can get (for rubber grips) Why change? I have a pair of black micarta for the BFR 500 S&W but the gun does move a bit more with full power loads. The Hogue rubber grip on the Ruger SBH is a good grip but will not fit the BFR.

I wear a medium sized glove and the factory grips work, but don't offer the control that the decellerators do.
I have seen several BFRS with the Hogues on them (wood and rubber), both JT and DM frames. There must be a way to make them fit.

I fit these to my 475 L. It has been awhile ,but, I believe I ground out the plastic in back of the trigger guard. They work great. Are very comfortable with heavy loads and offer lots of control.

@ Tek4260-You mentioned in a previous post that your BFR grip frame was off at the stock makers getting some new grips. Any chance you got the new grips back and we could see a picture?

I love the way the Micartas look on mine, but as stated above, the revolver moves around too much under full power. While the rubber grips are hideous, they do work well.

Haven't got it yet. The maker contacted me the other day and I told him there was no rush at all. He could wait till Christmas 2012 if he liked, but I doubt he waits that long! I'll post the pics when it arrives. I have a sneaky suspicion that the grips will be perfect.
