Last month I ran across some experimental cases a guy sent me back around 2002. At the time I was posting threads about my 450 Bonecrusher idea. He was also developing a new cartridge that was essentially a lengthened 454. Now lots of folks think up wildcats, but he actually had Starline make the brass and was kind enough to send me 5: Though headstamped "45 Win Mag", it is rimmed. Dimensions are as follows: Case length = 1.62" Case diameter = 0.476" Rim diameter = 0.510" Seemed logical for a long-frame because it would handle 45 Colt and 454. Never heard anything more about, then the 460 S&W came out a few years later. Just thought I'd share this with the forum. I'm fascinated with experimental rounds and knew some of you would be interested in seeing it. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Very cool. That is a cartridge that would fit into a Maximum. The .460 has a 1.8-inch case, doesn't it?

Yep. If I remember correctly he was going to use Max frames for the conversion. Now Elgin Gates thought up the 455 SuperMag way back when, but I never saw the specs. Probably pretty close to this. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I thought the 460 S&W was a 1.6 case like the 500?

The "45 Maximum", not to be confused with the 458 Maximum by John Linebaugh are both 1.6" cases.
The 45 max was a brainchild (If I remember correctly) of Elgin Gates along with the other supermags. Probably labeled the 45 supermag. It has also been cone by Mike Harmon of DesMoines IA. as well as others I'm sure.
