It amazes me how a little research would prevent a glaring mistake like the 45 Colt in the Mod 92. A pistol /carbine combo in 44-40 would work just as well in a western novel and at least be historically accurate. Yep, I just finished "Brimstone", the last book by Robert B. Parker to feature the characters from Appaloosa, and even a prolific writer like Parker has a line near the end of "Virgil has his Colt pistol and his Winchester rifle, both in .45 caliber"..... Of course, though out all of his westerns, Parker constantly refers to his characters reloading Colt Single Action Army revolvers as "he opened the cylinder, removed the spent cartridges, replaced them with fresh ones, and closed the cylinder". Might that .45 caliber rifle have been a 45-60? If I remember correctly Winchester chambered the Model 1873 in that caliber.

Paco is correct about the 1985 Date. Being a fan(atic) of the .45 Colt cartridge I longed for a lever gun in that caliber. In 1985 When I saw the newly cataloged Trapper in .45 Colt I had to have one. Took a year for me to find one. But I got and I still have it. Works just fine.
Now, just some comments about the tiny rims of the early balloon head cases. I've shot them loaded with black and smokeless out of my Win 94AE, Marlin 1894, Rossi 92 without issue. I know others who have used them extensively from their Uberti 73s and Henrys again without issue. Certain brands of the old cases have more rounder rims WRA Co for instance. Others have a much squarer rim REM-UMC and those with the squarer rims do work better.
Now in a novel set in the 1870s or 80s it would be quite easy to say the main character had his Colt revolver and Winchester rifle, both in 45 caliber; and still be historically correct. Colt SAA in .45 Colt, Winchester 1876 in 45-60 or 45-75, or later the 1886 in one of the 45 cartridges it was chambered for. Pretty easy if a bit of research is done.

The 45-60 was chambered in it's big brother the 1876. Joe
