My Savage Scout has borne the Millett 2X pistol scope long enough, and I have other projects in mind for it... (like a scout 10-22 and/or SKS system) and I'm looking at the Leatherwood LER as a budget alternative to the leupold. My first thought was the Burris scout system would be a budget alternative, but the total savings would be about $30... the leatherwood is quite a bit cheaper. I know ya can't buy oats at horseapple prices, and I also know I've never found myself saying "Gosh, I wish I had bought the cheaper less durable (fill in the blank)." Anybody have any Leatherwood optics?

My hunting pard uses one in a scout set up on a 1886 EL shooting some really hot 45-70's and has never had a problem. He's taken it to Africa a couple of times also. Seems to be a good scope. I wanted the same setup on my guide gun about a year ago but couldn't find one anywhere. I called Leatherwood and they said it would be a couple of months or more before they had any available. I had a hunt coming up and couldn't wait. I asked the gentleman at leatherwood if he would recommend something and he told me to buy a NCstar. I did, very cheap, and it has actually worked out very well. I was leery because of the price so I bought two of them so I could sight both in and have one for a backup. The second one has never been out of the box yet. So far it has held up to some pretty stout 45-70 loads. Both together was less then 100 dollars. Your mileage may vary.

My experience with Leatherwod has been nothing but bad, I have owned 4, 2 came on rifles and where already broke, the other 2 were the replacements the factory sent me for those 2. Both those rifles wore el cheapo tascos from wally world when they left, I thought the Tasco was a better scope

I had a couple Tascos that were awful. I still have an NcStar 2-7x LER that I have yet to mount... maybe the Leupold is the way to go.

I'm not rich by any means, just cheap. I have found that there instances (and think NcStar might be one of them) were you can get good gear and not pay for a name

I have one that I used on my M1As. It worked well and has good optical clarity. I have no use for it now having sold both my M1As.

The Japanese Weavers if still available are excellent scopes. Durable, clear glass, half the price of Leupold, 3x the price of NC Star or that other shiiite brand Weaver now sells as their entry level (do NOT BUY!!!)

Have one on my Springfield m1a scout rifle with the bullet drop reticle. Surprisingly good glass and has held up.

have two 2x7 scout scopes in use.
one for 6 years (+) the other for two years now.
both have served well especially the older one that has been in the back of a jeep for the first 5 years of its life and now in a pickup truck..
would but one again if i needed to - i have a fixed power burris that's now about 8 years old, it's super light but for the price it's hard to beat the hilux units..
