The day is rapidly approaching to where I can finally ( ;D) get that custom Ruger built. I have yet to decide if it will be stainless or blued with Turnbul color work. It will be a bisley. It will sport a 5.5 in. octagonal barrel. Or a 4.58 in. barrel. Glc grips. Now here is the biggest quandary. The caliber. I have pondered all the biggies and have narrowed it down to .500L, .500WE, or the one that has really peaked my interest the .50 Spl. If you all have any pics of said gun in that caliber I would like to see them. I also would like to hear of your experiences shooting this round and how you liked or disliked it. Thanks in advance. Just remembered to add that this will be my ferral pig getter gun.

How about that 50GI version that Bowen does on the mid frame FT?

That one is going to be project number two. Depending on funds of course!

Here is a 50 Bowen Special. Load data is pretty simple, 8.0 grains of unique and any bullet from 300-400 grains. 8.0 and a 400 grainer runs 800 fps. What's not to like?

Now that is odd. I responded to Kaytod's post yesterday, Friday. Now I see that my response aint here.
Any way I really like that one Kaytod! With a couple of modifications, such as the octagonal barre and a lanyard ring, that is darn near what I have in mind!

I spoke with Hamilton once about the 510 - 512 caliber 50's. I like the idea of a 50 Special, but would like the ability to load up heavier if needed. He suggested the 510 Reeder, which he said would behave better when downloaded as opposed to the 500L which can burn a bit erratic when downloaded.
There is also the 500 Special which is the 500 S&W cut down. The upside of this is the ability to use factory bullets if you chose.
This is a tough decision for me, too, as it may be the only true custom I might be able to afford.

I agree that the decisions are tough.
But that is half the fun, no?

I have considered building a lightweight .5xx spl on a BH (maintaining the aluminum grip frame and ERH). I corresponded with one smith who told me the lightweight guns get a bit unmanageable with ~900 fps loads. He suggested having a steel grip frame gun for the add’l weight. I ask myself, “what am I gaining over my .500L bisley then?”
I spoke with a friend who pointed out why bother with trimming brass when you could just download a full size .500L down to <950fps. I already have a .500L load using Unique and a 465gr LBT that does ~750 fps and is extremely accurate out of my .500L bisley. I personally have <950 fps loads and know of other folks with such loads using the full size .500L that shoot extremely well. I am not convinced of the need to use a shorter case to find good shooting light loads in a .51x caliber.
Now don’t get me wrong, building a .5xx spcl “just because it’s cool” is plenty enough reason. However, if I was going to build it (especially if I was using a bisley). Unless I have a butt load of .50 spcl brass laying around, I think it’s much more practical to build a .500L and simply download it to <950 fps if that’s what I want. No need to modify my brass or dies.
Just my 2 cent, c.r.

Bowen posts pictures of the lightweight 50AE he built. www.bowenclassicarms.com/gallery.html There are tales out there about how unpleasant it is to shoot. I've got a 4 inch round but 500WE FA that can be an eye opener with a case full of H110. I think that the bottom line is your gun, your ideas.. Go for it!

This is a tough decision for me, too, as it may be the only true custom I might be able to afford. That's odd as there is very little size difference between the two cases (.510 GNR and .500 Linebaugh). The loaded ammo I got for the .510 GNR was loaded long to nearly the same OAL of the .500 Linebaugh. I think the .500 Linebaugh is a pretty flexible cartridge that can be loaded up or down without issues. No need to steer clear of it IMO.

Thank you Rob L, and RVN Infantry. (12 B myself)
It's really sweet, unfoutunately it may have to go. John Linebaugh has my next project and I may have to re-visit my holster buddies.
