Gents,
Don't think me weak or soft in the head, but I have a chance to buy a early 2nd generation 4 3/4 Colt SAA. I'm scratching up the cash to close the deal. Th gun is unfired and as close to NIB as you could wish to find. So what is the tough decision you ask?
I am fixin' to pay more for this revolver than I did for my first car. Heck, I'm gonna pay more than I did for my first two cars together. Am I losing my mind? Somebody either talk me into or out of this. I've been looking for a early 2nd gen. 4 3/4 45 Colt SAA for a long time, but the entrance fee is rough!

I have never had a Colt single action I did not like.
If you are paying a fair market price unlike your 1st car it will on re sell you will recover about what you paid or more. How many things can you buy in life entertain yourself with and get your money back?

Like Len said, when you bought your first car that Colt was probably about $50.00. Probably should have bought Colt's instead and rode a bike. If you're considering the Colt it is probably not a life /death, eat/go hungry kind of decision like the car was then so it's probably just a do it, or hind sight remorse it kind of thing.

The early 2nd 4 3/4 .45 is one of the most desirable SAAs IMO. Purchasing the gun (especially LNIB) is an excellent decision. The price of admittance is high, however at some point the bill will be paid and you will have one of the best Colt single actions ever.
A gun like you are describing simply does not become available for purchase that often. Seize the opportunity.

Gentlemen you are absolutely right.
Every now and again I get hit by a case of "how much am I gonna spend for another gun" disease.
I don't buy a new piece all that often and have quit all my other vices. Don't you hate getting old.
The only vice I have left is buying Colts.
I do remember when the prices for these guns were low, but I guess it is all relative -- back then I was too broke to buy them even at those prices.
Thank you all for the clarity. Every now and again it is nice to hear from a few like minded fellows.

Yeah, I'm curious, too. An early (pre-1960) 4 3/4" .45 Colt 2nd Gen SAA in that condition is a really tough find. Very nice guns.

I'd say,get it,if you can. You'll never know when something like this will come your way again (almost never). [That's the reason why I bought a F.A. 454 Casull.I heard,it was the only one for sale in Modesto. Was at PV's Ranch and Supply.]

How early? Black box gun? No 4 &3/4 the first two years and not many each year after that compared to the number of 5 &1/2 and 7 &1/2" made.

Gents it is a black box gun, and it is unfired. The shipping date is 1960. I am paying a premium for a gun in this condition. A few years back I picked up a .38 special 4 3/4 1958 SAA (high hammer, fixed firing pin) in the same condition and count myself lucky to have found it. This gun in 45 LC will just about round out my needs for fixed firing pin 2nd generation Colts...
That is until the I get enough saved up to start looking again...
Mr Quinn, I like your statement about not too much, just too soon... If only some of my other "investments" would do as well!
Once I get the deal done and pick up the gun, I'll do my best to post a photo or two.
