Historically I have used a lot of H110 in my 5 shot 45 Colt revolvers. Recently I find myself reaching for Unique every once in a while and even looking at Trail Boss out of the corner of my eye...

Ok Jeep and that rambling has what to do with his question?? You're joking, right? This is his own thread! Cool story, jeep. Wouldn't have wanted to be in your shoes! I've heard a lot of good things about Universal Clays, and have been interested in trying it. But, is "Universal Clays" the same powder as what is refered to as simply "Universal"? What about "Clays"? I get confused and want to be sure I'm not getting the wrong powder. Yep, same reason I won't use it. Reading about here on the 'net confuses me, so standing in the store looking at all those powder cans would we worse. I'll stick to Unique. It isn't that dirty in spite of what others say and it flat out works. Joe

Unique by far in the .38-40, .44Spl, .44Mag and .45Colt. Plenty of 2400 and H110 as well but Unique is by far the favorite. Titegroup for .38Spl and .44Colt.

Green Dot for light loads and H110 for heavy. That's just my preference though. And I use Green Dot over Unique only because it burns a little cleaner and takes 1.0 grain less to hit the same velocity. All that said, I've never found the old Colt to be picky....any of the powders mentioned work fine. Just depends on the application. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I've used and like Trail Boss, HP-38, HS-6 and H-110. Lately I've been using a lot of Alliant Herco too.

I don't have just one favorite. My longtime go to powder has been Unique & I still use a lot of it. When we had the big powder shortage a while back I tried Herco because that's what I could buy. & I kind of like it.
Bob Munden suggested I try Titegroup, I did & I like it too. Trailboss great for light practice loads HS6 I'm liking it more & more A powder I don't shoot too much, but it gives powerful loads & you absolutely won't go over pressure in Colt & Colt clones, is: 35grs GOEX 3FG
I'd hate to have to use only one. Frank

I too am stuck on Unique and its not all that dirty. About same as any other brand today. Its great for factory 45 colt to warmer 950-1050fps loads with hard cast 250-255 gr. SWC or Flat-tips. Matter of fact I use it for 38spec.,357,9mm and 45acp to with great results. At one time for 16ga. shotguns to. Long live Unique!!

Hodgdon sells "Clays", "International Clays", and "Universal Clays". It can be a little confusing. It's been my observation [and my chronographs] that I can use Unique data and Universal Clays data interchageably. Unique has seemed to get cleaner and wasn't that an advertising point for Hodgdon a while back? I started using Universal a few years ago and haven't used any Unique since. I burn a bit of WW 296 in my 45 Colt sixguns too. Rugers only of course.

Frank Bob Munden sighted mine in using Tiegroup too so that is what I have stuck with. Haven't been disappointed, but these are light loads. If memory serve 750fps with 250g bullet.

It depends on what I'm going to do with the 45 colt. For light to med range loads, I use Unique. For the heavy ruger only loads, I use mass quantities of H110/WW296. As for the old argument about Unique being so dirty, I don't know about you, but I clean my guns after I shoot them anyway. Bill
