I only use Unique ,8grs. standard for older guns and up to 10 grs. for Ruger SA,s. My standard general purpose load is a 250swc with 8.5 grs. Its just plain shoots accurate!

That's a good load, I've shot a lot of it. My favorite powders for the .45 Colt are 231, Unique, 2400. I'm afraid I can't narrow it down to one. Each powder has a load level and works great that way.

35grs of FF Graffs is my favorite. Unique is the only other powder I use with 8gr and a 250.

I guess it depends on what you want the great old cartrige to do. I live in the west and want to hunt critters big and small, some have big teeth so I use a hefty dose of H-110 under a 300 gr cast slug. I should also mention that mine is a Ruger.

Yes I,ll take a 45colt 7.5 ruger bisley with those 300gr. bullets over a 44mag anyday. The biggest critter we have to worry about is a mountian lion in S.E.Ohio hill country. I seen a few over the last 5 years while hunting turkeys. ONDR says there are more sightings and like Bear,Bobcats there comming back And yes coyotes are abound. Seems every critter wants a turkey dinner to. I have shot 4 coyotes comming in on turkey calls, decoys. The mountian loins were comming in to,but there is no season on them yet. But if its your hide or theres its ok to save yourself.

How about 2 powders. HS-6 for mild and H-110 for regular loads(full power).

I generally use 3 powders for 45 Colt. WW-231 with 250-255 grain bullets over 7 grains 231 for about 800 fps. This is a nice, light recoiling target load that shows good accuracy in small frame 45's.
To move up the ladder a bit, I use Blue Dot with standard primers; about 13.0 - 13.5 grains is a max load in my New Vaquero and S&W 625-6 Mt Gun. I use the Speer 250 grain GDHP, and also hardcast 255 grain swc's, and 265 grain hardcast WFNGC for about 950-1000 fps depending on barrel length and which bullet is used.
Full tilt loads for my Bilsey 5.5" get H110/WW296. I like 22 grains 296 under a cast performance 335 grain WLNGC. This gives me 1196-1211 fps, depending on the cases I use.

Seems every critter wants a turkey dinner to. I have shot 4 coyotes comming in on turkey calls, decoys. I once caught a bobcat stalking me while set up calling turkeys. He had gotten way to close for comfort by the time I spotted his movement in the corner of my eye. Suddenly seeing those eyes intently staring at me like that just about gave me a heart attack. Spooky. I use 7.8 gr. Unique under 454190 or 454424 for my smokeless loads, and 35-40 grains FFg for my gunpowder loads. But, the only other powder I have tried was Tite-Group, with which I was unimpressed when compared to the Unique.

Yes sitting on a hayfield just inside a hardwood mast tree flat tree with a narrow deer trail running out to the hayfield. I had my decoys 15 yards out into the hay field. I have seen many deer &turkey travel this trail into the hayfield. And seen many turkey roost in the trees over this strip of woods. It has a pond behind me and a basin or bowl as we call it that echoes gobbles at sunrise. A great funnel of travel by all the critters traveling from this patch accross the hayfield to another cut and valley of mast trees ,srub bush and cow pasture woods with hay and some big old trees here and there. Anyway up the deer trail comes the mountain lion at 35yards he stares a hole in me with that near 100lb.body and big as a basket ball head. He turned broadside and slid back into the woods. My rem 870 was ready to send a ww-3" load of copperplated 5,s his way and my SA 45 colt ready for close work. My hair stood up on the back of neck! Last time the hair went like that a pack of feral dogs that was eating roadkill deer at a hour before sunrise thought I was gonna get there food and started to come toward me at 50 yds. I yelled get out of here shining a flashlite at those 8 red eyes while loading and firing a shell at those red eyes moving my way. They yelped and ran and I backed out of the open woods back accross the creek and went somewhere else for 2-3 hours or so. I came back about 11:00 and thats when I seen the ate deer carass, but no sign of the feral dogs. I picked morel mushrooms in those spoils and woods still 1-2pm and the SA 45 rode in the Slim Jim Holster allways ready.

I took Sheriff Jim Wilsons advice and tried Universal Clays [8.5-9 grains] and it is cleaner and just as accurate for me.

Ok Jeep and that rambling has what to do with his question?? You're joking, right? This is his own thread! Cool story, jeep. Wouldn't have wanted to be in your shoes! I've heard a lot of good things about Universal Clays, and have been interested in trying it. But, is "Universal Clays" the same powder as what is refered to as simply "Universal"? What about "Clays"? I get confused and want to be sure I'm not getting the wrong powder.
