Can you shoot .480 Ruger in a Freedom Arms M83 chambered in .475 Linebaugh? The manual only states that FA does not recommend shooting .45 Long Colt in .454 Casull revolvers.

I believe that FA will tell you the same thing on 480/475 as they do for 45C/454. It is simply a matter of the tight chambers that FA cuts in their guns. A slight build up of whatever residue in front of the case mouth while firing your 480s sits right where the 475 is going to try to straighten out the crimp. That can drive major pressure spikes when you load a 475 behind your 480s without a thorough cleaning first. Lots of people say that they do it with their 454s and 475s with no problems but for my FAs I'd spend the bucks for an extra cylinder to eliminate the possibilities.

I tried fitting a new Hornady .480 Ruger round in my new M83 Premier and the cylinder does not want to turn freely. It will drag as the round rotates from the loading position to the lower rear of the frame. Are the case rims on .475 Linebaugh rounds thinner than .480 Ruger rims?

Bob Baker (owner of Freedom Arms) answers your question in REPLY #20 in this thread at Graybeards. Although the thread is about using 45 Colt in the .454 C, it should apply equally to the .480 in the .475LB: www.go2gbo.com/forums/index.php/topic,189645.0.html I've only shot about 50 rounds of Hornady Factory .480 and .475LB in my M83. Both seemed to exhibit the rotational drag you experienced. I've shot a bunch of handloads with the same gun using Starline Brass and have never had that problem. My belief is that the some Hornady .480/.475 rims are a bit on the thick side. Like Axe above, my .454 has an auxiliary .45 Colt cylinder and I don't use .480 cases in my .475 LB M83. Paul

Have you tried the Speer .480 Ruger ammo? It is available at very resonable prices online.

My factory 480 ammo has been limited to Hornady. I was lucky and ran up on some once fired 480 brass that came of a range where a lot of early 480 testing was done.
FWIW I've still got Sixshot's Harton 480 stuck in my head... I've got quite a few 475s though and even have two more currently inbound so I don't know if I will ever have a dedicated 480 outside of a Ruger SRH.
