As a side note in case some dont know, he was also a decorated Army Veteran, the stiff legged gait that he had was from wounds recieved at the Battle of Anzio.

A sad day with the loss of this great tv legend. This is from his personal website www.jamesarness.com/index.html"In lieu of flowers the family asks that donation be made to United Cerebral Palsy in Jim’s name."

I was quite sad to hear this news. His brother, Peter Graves, passed away in 2010. They both were fine actors. I still watch the old re-runs of Gunsmoke on Starz western channel a couple of days each week after work while watching my grandson. All of the stars of that show have now passed on...Milburn Stone, Dennis Weaver, Amanda Blake, Ken Curtis and now James Arness.
Only Burt Reynolds remains from the cast, although he was only there for a short time.
The list of old western stars that remain alive is growing frighteningly short.

Best as I can tell Buck Taylor is the only surviving regular cast member.

I saw him once when I was a small boy. We were on a family vacation in Calif. He was walking around the restaurant that we were visiting. Sad to see him go.

Best as I can tell Buck Taylor is the only surviving regular cast member. Burt Renyolds (he played the indian blacksmith for a couple seasons back in the B&W days) is still kicking the last time I checked. ;D Otherwise yes he outlived almost everyone.

I too was saddened by the news. We are witnessing the end of an era. Some of us grew up with shows like Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger, & others. They were great shows. Then there were the Gunsmoke series. I shall miss the old shows. An era passes! Frank
