I have the Super Blackhawk on the way, but of course got to thinking about what would make it my dream sixgun. I love the Bisley grip frame as it fits my hand about perfect and helps with recoil. I see the you can now purchase a frame, but it requires fitting. I have not be able to determine exactly what that entails.
I am just wondering if anyone here has done this? Is it a home project or better left to a gunsmith?
Thanks so much for you time,
Matt

Do be done properly it often includes welding.

A new grip frame will be proud where it matchs up to the cylinder frame. A little slow work with a flat file can usually bring them into line pretty quick. The ones I have held fit the gun well enough to be screwed to the guns and used. New Bisley grips frames have become hard to find... A used one may need some welding. You will need a set of screws along with a Bisley hammer and trigger. Don't forget grips too. For me in most cases it is best to just look for a factory Bisley Ruger...

I am just wondering if anyone here has done this? Is it a home project or better left to a gunsmith? Matt I had Jim Stroh at ALPHA PRECISION convert 5.5 inch SUPERS to BISLEYS with a BROWNELL'S kit in stainless...no longer in stock. He also did an Original Size VAQUERO for me later. If you're handy with tools...or not too fussy about cosmetics...you can do it yourself. You need a hammer, trigger, grip frame and the two allen headed bolts on either side of the hammer (concealed by grips.) Lots of patience is another requirement...I cheerfully paid the $80 to have it done when he did the trigger/action job...the man is an artist. Biggest problem will be getting the parts from RUGER or ?

You can do one with hand tools, and a couple of sheet of wet dry sandpaper, there will need to be a re-blue. The kits Brownell's sells are in the white.

I believe the biggest problem is finding a Bisley grip frame!

I think I have one located. I am going to pull the frame off my Blue .45 Colt Bisley and see how it matches up. This might give me an idea of what I am getting into.

what axehandle said. the bisley set from brownell's runs $218 without grips. if you get a grip frame alone, then you will have to get a hammer at least if your gun has a lock you will need to get a longer hammer strut and a spring seat. figure the price of the gun and you haven't gotten grips or the frame welded which it may need. i have a 41 blackhawk i went this route with and i have a stainless 45 colt 5 and a half inch barreled gun on layaway for $464. buying a bisley from the get go is the way to go.
