It has made some progress in the looks department with some refined forearm design, and will make some more progress with some dehorning and sculpting. It will still be somewhat aesthetically challenged, BUT ... it is one HECK of a shooter and that gripframe, while not the prettiest, is more comfortable, recoil-wise, than anything else I've ever shot. The extractor is positive, and the gun has a safety system in it that is innovative and does not affect trigger pull in the least.
I don't know when I will get one ... I may wait til the rifle design comes out ... but I will get one, for certain.

The handgun uses the Mdl. 83 gripframe, so it is comfortable to grip. Yes, the action does resemble the Wichita International a bit, but actually has much more in common with the RPM XL, utilizing a thumb lever to open the action, and with an external sliding bar extractor. The action is rather long as single shot handguns go, and Bob told me that he intends to offer the 6.5x55 barrel as a 16" length, plus muzzle break, so that configuration will make for one long dude. The one Flatlander and I shot is a pussycat for recoil, though.

And there are a lot less legal pitfalls

That was kind of the gist of the discussions on the old board back then.....I just think it is ... inelegant and from the makers of such a beautiful revolver, rather disappointing. I remember when it was originally brought up. I agreed with you then and still do. While I'm sure it's a wonderful shooter, I just simply don't care for its looks. It looks like it was designed for a video game. Too square and blocky, no elegance, no style, it is just a machine. Like it was designed by the same guy that designed their dovetail front sight. Just too angular.

Puts me in mind of the (I believe?) Merrill pistol: very angular and blocky. I did my time with the Contender and once had a strong yen for Remington XP in 7mm BR... but I sat down and it passed. I have no doubt it will be a fine hunting tool. Doesn't do anything for me.

I've never owned a single shot handgun. This version from Freedom Arms does not appeal to me at all aesthetically. I do however like the feel and recoil handling qualities of the Model 83. The 6.5 x 55 appeals to me on a number of different levels. So, when these become available from FA, one in 6.5 x 55 will be my first foray into single action handgunning.
FWIW,

"one in 6.5 x 55 will be my first foray into single action handgunning."
Not to be difficult here, but this thread and the embedded link were about a new/prototype Freedom Arms RIFLE, correct? And the RIFLE was chambered for 6.5x55. I realize FA is also working on a single shot handgun, but I'm worried some of the posters above may be confusing the issue.
Just because the FA SS pistol looks (fill in the blank) doesn't mean a FA rifle would be similar, although that would be logical (witness the TC Contender and Encore).
I think we should give them a chance, let them design it and let folks wring them out, offer feedback and allow FA to do some fine-tuning. I'll bet their new offerings will be winners just like their revolvers.

The prototype being tested now and that will go into production soon is a single shot handgun.
They plan to offer it in rifle format soon after ... working on stock designs and such ... but that's down the road a bit.
