Chaz and I have been kicking around the idea of a .327 Federal for fun & varmints and have been discussing our options. While I like the new Ruger BH with its 8-shot cylinder, it seems a bit large for the job @ 48 oz. I was thinking perhaps a .327 Single Six, perhaps a Bisley, preferrably stainless, maybe w/a Hunter configuration barrel for the option of mounting a scope. I'm guessing that, despite the fact that Ruger has chambered the SS for the 32 H&R Mag in the past, they won't be squeezing the .327 F into the SS since they already have the BH. To realize this dream, I'm afraid we're going to have to go custom, or the FA M97. (Oh, the horror! ) I see Hamilton Bowen has some gorgeous .327 F's built on the blued SS platform. Have any of you had something built like I described above and can you give any feedback on it's performance as a small game tool? Also, if I found a 32H&R, is conversion to .327 F as simple as having the cylinder's chambers reamed deeper by the requisite amount? Thank you, Max.

The Single Six needs a longer cylinder for the 327. Bowen and Clements offer the option of just fitting a cylinder.

This is a single six bisley that was converted by John Gallagher to 327 by a longer cylinder and shorteningthe barrel protrusion into the cylinder window. A whale of a fun gun to use on gophers etc.

The Hunter configuration would be an interesting conversion and would definitely be possible. The barrel would have to be rebored and the frame converted to centerfire but the cost wouldn't be too prohibitive.

I approached Alan Harton about making a 327 Single Six Hunter. Best I remember he said that the steel in the Hunter barrel was to hard to make into a 32...

Check out Bowen Classic Arms web site. Hamilton is currently building a 327 on a single six frame with a S&W barrel, plus other goodies, and it's for sale. If I did not currently have him building two customs (38WCF on a OMBH and 45Colt on a OM44 Flat top), I would buy it myself.

Harton built my 327 Single Six custom using a custom cylinder. Its an incredibly fine 327 too. In my opinion Bowens cylinders are a bit short, so I cant recommend that route. Look hard at the FA97. It will cost less than a custom barreled custom cylinder Ruger SS and you wont wait. I have a octagon FA97 in 32-20/32 Mag and its just a dandy. Fowler found it in a gunshop in Colorado for me. 15 mins later I owned it. Wouldnt take much to make it a 327/32-20 either.

Oh, BTW, my Harton custom SS exits a 118 grain LBT GC at 1550 fps. Accurate and hard hitting!
